Just wanted to get some opinions on everyone's experience with their factory taco tires.

Try not to immediately bash them because, we all now there are better ones out there, but point out some good and bad characterristics for each tire that came equipped on their truck.

I've seen some deals on CL where people are selling their factory tires really cheap and they are just about brand new. I know, I know, this is telling me that they suck but......

I think there are five tires that come on these trucks. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    1. Dunlop radial AT 20
    2. BFGoodrich rugged trail T/A
    3. BFGoodrich Rugged Terrain
    4. BFGoodrich A/T KO
    5. Bridgstone Deulers

Bridgestones. 2006 DCSB TRD Sport 4X4

GOODS- decent tire, smooth, quiet, good traction, no problems in the water that I can remember, and seemed like a more sturdy tire.

BADS- seems like they wore really fast (also drove the piss outta this truck) tread would tear easy (dirt roads, GA roads) 25K miles and they looked pretty bad

Overall- not a bad tire but I wouldn't buy again.

    Dunlop 2012 DCSB SR5 4X4

Goods- quiet, smooth, no hydroplaning experienced, good traction, and seem to be wearing good. 8K miles and still look new. Truck is babied ;)

Bad- ugly I mean Fugly, look to narrow for the truck, seems to fold in corners (not sure if it's because of 16" wheels) overall seems like a really weak tire, not sure if I would tow with this tire.

Overall- they seem to be a decent tire but I would buy something more sturdy in the future.

What is your experince with the factory tires and how would you rate them? If you replaced them, what tire did you replace them with, and how did they compare to the previous tire?

    Thanks,

    Nate

Everyone will tell you the dunlops and rugged trails are pretty much garbage, the reviews on the other tires are mixed, however.

BFG TA KO 35k miles 80% tread remaining. Excellent in all conditions. Trails, light mud, rock , loose trail, woods (aired to 15)
Road manners are great, they've been great in the snow (others will disagree).

I hate the Rugged Trail tires. They should be illegal for how dangerous they are when the roads are wet or snow covered. I have plenty of tread depth remaining (18k miles) and my damn truck slides around with just 1/8" accumulation of snow. I just don't understand why they are so terrible when they have plenty of tread remaining.

Still making due with them though through the rest of this winter.

    I figured as much.

I honestly do not think the dunlops are that bad of a tire. They may not be suitable for others but for a truck mainly driven on the street for day to day task, I don't see them as "garbage" tire. They are not great by any means.

I hear lots of good reviews on those tires. 35K miles with 80 percent is stupid good! Did you notice a drop in MPG?

Nope. Size is 31x10.5-15. Slightly smaller then the stock 265/70/16 but wider. I've ran these tires on last truck till they were bald 96k trashed.

All I know is I bought my 09 with 14,000 miles on it and the dunlops were already crap. The first test drive I took the dunlops peeled out with barely a touch of the gas. I know they are a budget tire but holy jees-us, they are crap!

Honestly man, I hear and read such shitty reviews on these tires all the time. I have no idea why Toyota insists putting them on their trucks. Makes no sense to me even if they are a cheaper A/T tire.

I would rather walk then drive on rugged fails again. Rain traction is like driving on a bald tire in the snow. And the snow traction is no traction.

Just about all factory tires SUCK.

I can't wait to change mine out.
COuld not find anyone to sell, give, or trade them to.
Even with 20 miles they would not trade them in at several tire dealers, they said no one will want them....
So I will use them up a little and then replace them.

The Rugged Terrains have good reviews, so do the BFG T/A KOs.

    A few
have the bridgestone deulers, got a nail in one this weekend, they fixed it no problem but upon inspection the tread is just ripping off.. its rediculous. im out in west texas and these dirt roads and trails are ripping them to shreds. way too soft. but highway travel is actually pretty good, good road traction in rain/standing water/dry. the snow they had no traction at all as well as any kind of wet sand/mud. dont know what to go to next. i dont want to go to a fully mud tire but i would like a good thick all terrain that isnt too expensive but will hold up and look good

    only 8k also

Yeah, I had the Dunflops. And after 3 days of getting my truck, I made it my immediate goal to get much better tires. Down here in Louisiana, it is constantly humid and dewy. I couldn't even get up a short incline on the road. I peeled the hell out and finally decided to just throw it in 4 wheel drive, where I slowly screeched and smoked my way up 5 feet.

Had Bridgestone Dueller H/T II 664 I believe.

They were quiet, and had a bit better mileage than my same size winter tires and one size bigget AT tires. (duh..) They did not last very long imo. 50k kms of pavement driving when I got rid of them. They were around 4/32's inch of thread left at that point. Never liked them on snow/ice, rain was ok, but not great. They are highway tire, therefore fugly. Kept them until they wore out as I could not justify geting rid of them with thread left, but would not buy those again.

So you were on "paved" road when this occured? I live in similar if not the same conditions as you and have yet to get stuck on a dew/ overly humid road.
That had to be asphault with a grade of 20% or more....

Only thing I can think of is that the tread compound is designed to provide less friction, which helps increase gas mileage and helps Toyota better achieve that 20MPG highway rating for the 4x4.

Its stupid planning on Toyota's part, since the Terrain costs about $150-$200 more for all 4 and are relatively good tires for moderate off-road use. You don't hear any of the Baja owner's complaining about their factory tires.

I give it that it was a much more smooth asphalt. It was laid recently. But it surely wasn't the only time I had trouble.
I got stuck on the side of the road once -_- It was a little too muddy for the tires to handle. My friend was able to just get out and push me.
And these tires had a fair amount of tread left. I was a little cautious to buying new tires because I didn't want to just waste the ones still on.
