I read an article that a Volkswagen service rep showed me about a test of oils that was done on NYC taxis. The brand of oil had almost no effect on engine wear. The frequency of changes was the most important factor.

$38 seems pricey. I get mobile one synthetic in a 5qt jug at my local Walmart for $27. Also, sometimes Coscto has 6 qts of Mobil1 in sale for like $28.

i read a similar article in motortrend few years back that in effect said theirs been so many advancments in motor oil the last 20 years that even " plain house brand oil " sold today is way better than the top shelf brand name oil of years back. and like you said changing it regularly made all the diffrence.

I thought Mobil 1 5 quart is 24.99 at Walmart ? ..honestly dont buy oil at part stores there over priced unless you do the monthly oil deal

Rotella is not the correct weight for the Tacoma.

If he has a 2.7, the engine uses 0w20 or 5w20 synthetic.
5w30 is acceptable in the V6.

Auto parts store brand = lowest bidder for the contract.
Likewise with Walmart synthetic, but at least it's synthetic.

The taxicab test revealed nothing useful. It was hard usage, but not the same usage as a typical daily driver. Those cabs were started in the morning and ran all day.
Daily drivers see frequent cold starts and short trips. It's a completely different kind of "hard" service than the high heat, low RPM high loading and extended idling that NYC cabs see.

Not sure what that means....I'd rather run a quality oil then screw with some generic garbage synthetic.

Additionally I'm still not sold on going with a synthetic and changing yearly. Crap still turns black in 5k miles and the filters still get dirty.

I tend to use the MX theory - yeah those. $30 a quart race oils a great - but if you can't afford to change it every 12hr, then why bother? Use what you can afford to maintain.

Extended drain intervals have been pushed by synthetic manufacturers in an effort to make the cost more comparable to non-synthetics... and considering that you're saving on the extra filter change, synthetics CAN indeed equal the same cost long term.

But extended drain intervals is not the only, nor the primary, advantage of running synthetic. Extended drain intervals may offset some of the other advantages of running synthetic.

    Synthetic offers the advantages of:
Lower cold-flow point (comes up to pressure more quickly and with less stress on the oil bump in freezing temperatures)

Better film retention (more oil remaining on the bearings when you go out at 5am and start the engine)

Better resistance to coking. Coking is the black carbonization that happens when oil is subjected to high heat and the volatile compounds boil off. Coking leads to sludge formation. Also, this is extremely important in turbo applications, because at engine shutdown, the turbo remain spinning after oil flow stops, and the turbo housing is hot.

I run only Mobil-1 or Amsoil synthetics, and I change every 5k.
The 2011 and newer 2.7 engines specify synthetic and come with it from the factory.

If that is what you can afford, I'd go with the Walmart Synthetic over o'reiley's conventional. If they are both syn, either one is fine. Chances are they come from the same place. I.e., lowest bidder.

Likely... and with the limited number of synthetic producers, it is likely Pennzoil, Valvoline, or Castrol.
It's going to be a Group-III, but there is nothing wrong with a Group-III synthetic.

    What he said...

I don't know why people seem to think the only reason to run synthetic is so you don't need to change it as often.

Because I have 198k miles on my 4runner 3.4 and it still runs fine with perfect compression - Generally speaking few people own cars that long or with that much mileage anymore... so who cares if it needs a rebuild before 400k. I certainly won't have my Tacoma that long.
