Possible to convert non-steering wheel control to one with audio controls

I'll explain it a little better than the title. Basically I am looking for a 2007 or newer tacoma double cab 4wd, but as petty as it sounds, I really don't want to buy one that does not have the steering wheel audio controls. To me it is convenience I love to have.

Thus, with that said, is it possible to buy one without the steering wheel audio controls and convert it to one that does. My guess is that it is possible, but what all would it involve and how much would it cost do you think?

 

I started and never finished. No one know for sure if its possible or at least I couldn't find any definite answer. I have the steering wheel then found out i need the correct clock spring. From there I'm not sure if its wired from the column to radio.

 

Yea I wasn't sure what it involved. I was hoping someone on here has done it.

 

I'm pretty sure I can finish if I get the $150 clock spring.. I have the third plug behind the radio I just haven't traced it to where it stops. Could be as simple as plugging it in at the clock spring column side. I found a steering wheel from a 4runner and a new airbag cover for about $150

Where did you find the steering wheel and airbag cover?

 

So far I have $150 in. Refuse to buy the clock spring until I know it will work. Just haven't gotten around to it. I found the steering wheel on car-parts.com and the airbag cover on ebay

FYI I just found a schematic so I don't have to trace wires. I have to check the plug going into the steering wheel for the 3 wires. If my pre-runner is pre wired as its "supposed" to be then all I need is the correct spiral cable. I will attempt to check in the next couple of days.

I've been wanting to do this since I bought my truck new! I've asked around and searched the world wide interwebz, but couldn't find a definitive answer. I did find this, though. It's definitely helpful, but it's for a Toyota Prado (the wiring harness is different). I haven't looked at it in a long time, but for the electrical engineers here on TW it may provide enough info for them to complete the job on a Tacoma.

As far as having the correct clock spring, will the recall clock spring I receive tomorrow (yes, going in for the clock spring recall tomorrow morning at my local dealership) be the correct version to accept the steering wheel controls? I still don't know if my truck is pre-plumbed between the stereo and steering wheel, but I know it's pre-plumbed for many other things (i.e. mystery connectors behind dash switch blanks).

For those interested in the upgrade, I have a leather wrapped steering wheel with the controls available for sale. Excellent condition. No air bag, but they are available on eBay. $120 shipped.

I was going to do this upgrade on my first gen Tacoma, but determined that the air bags are programmed different due to different body designs and impact zones. Don't want to risk safety.

I've been wondering if the new clock spring they use is now all the same and might have the correct plug. Might try that first.

 

If you can get me the part# for the clock spring they install i can check with the part# i need.

 

Update for you. I traced the correct wired into the spiral cable so my prerunner is pre-wired just need the correct spiral cable and it should work. Going to attempt the recall first and see if that gives me the right one.

 

Sorry, I missed this earlier. My recall service invoice shows several different numbers/codes, but the closest thing to a part number is 04002-04104 (other numbers are 2529BD and 51430).
