My 2010 Tacoma just started making a tapping noise at cold start/fast idle. It isn't the normal engine noise that the Tacomas make, it sounds as if it is coming from the lower part of the fire wall in the cab on the driver's side. When it is in drive it is a slower tap and when it is in park or neutral it is faster. Does anyone know what it could be? I am scheduled to take it in to the dealer tonight so they can have it to look at when it is cold in the morning.

Maybe your injectors are making more noise than usual. Have you filled up with gas from a different gas station than usual recently ?

I can't hear the sound under the hood. It sounds as if it is coming from under my feet when sitting in the driver's seat and it only makes the noise when the truck is at high idle at initial start up. When the truck get's to normal temp the noise is gone................

Exhaust touching a heat shield, or something else in the area?

its the heat shield around the cats just cut them off it will only get worse. it drove me nuts whenever i would pulled in to a fast food drive thru it would amplify the sound. and if that doesn't fix it then you just got rid of a future rattle lol

Is there any chance it could be from using super unleaded gas?

there is an evap system component (forgot the name) that clicks
like that. on some 4runners there was a TSB to quiet it down

likely you are just hearing an evap system doing it's thing

    ---
get a stethoscope, find the noise.

under warranty ? have dealer find it

Ok , thanks for the info. I will try the stehoscope. It's weird nosie only heard inside the cab and only when the engine is cold in the morning. I'll take it to the dealer and see what they can find but I am sure I will get the usual " cant duplicate the problem from them "
