I've got about 1k miles on this truck and concerned that it doesn't know when to upshift or downshift. One issue is that it apparently needs to be in overdrive as quickly as possible but doesn't have the balls to pull the high gear at around 38 mph therefore immediately downshifts if the you try to accelerate....over and over and over. It also will wait after decelerating to drop to appropriate gear instead of following the deceleration. Anyone see this pattern before? I tend to drive it in 3rd to keep from shifting it to death. Thanks!

That's typical of the 4spd auto in the 2.7
It's all about fuel economy, and yes, there are some speed ranges where the truck is simply not comfortable.
It will improve as the engine and trans break in.

i was having a similar problem... annoying to the point of getting a new truck. i had a 2010 that had a similar problem to what you are describing. when i got the 2012, it drives totally differently. that said, there are still times when it seems to happen mildly- mostly when it is cold outside and the truck hasn't warmed up. i describe it in this thread:

It is annoying and doesn't seem like it's good for the transmission. What I do is wait for the tranny to down shift then I manually drop my four speed auto to third. Once I get to the top of the hill I kick it back into drive. Doubt this could injure it in any way?

My s-10 and colorado did the same thing...there are speeds where the tranny really loads the motor and lower speeds in OD wont take much hill before downshifting. Normal. Shift patterns are designed for fuel efficiency. If it really annoys you just drive in 3 around town, and save 4 for 50+ speeds.

I know a few guys who increased the throttle position sensor which in turn tells the trans to shift a lot later and a little more aggressive . Maybe a bit harder on fuel but would save from shift hunting soooooo much

It's not new, it's not Mexico
Modern electronically controlled automatic transmissions are set to up shift quickly to the highest gear for maximum fuel economy. Of course that leaves the transmission in too high a gear when you need to accelerate or maintain speed on a hill so it's gotta' down shift to maintain speed. What you are describing is the transmission doing it's job. I leave mine in D, set my cruise control & don't give the transmission a second thought.

My 2012 AC started out that way also and it was frustrating to me.

I now have 7K miles on it and it acts more normal.

I think it's break-in and learning the driving habits.

    Regards, Ron

I have over 22k miles on my access cab 4 cyl automatic. I can tell you it does get better as it breaks in. It constantly downshifted needlessly all the time up until about 15k.

Same hills and same speeds now are no problem and stays in a certain gear.

Thanks for the advice. 2500 miles now. I'll use D and let it figure it out. Kinda feel sorry for the clutches :)
