    depends... who is doing the rebuild? How was the used engine treated? It can go either way.

    With any USED anything - you're taking chances.

    How does one refurb an engine with cast in place cylinder walls that are 5 sheets of paper thick?

    good luck

    new or used is the way to go.

    A refurbishment doesn't always require boring the cylinder. You can still hone the cylinder.

    Boring doesn't equal honing.

    Yea if you catch it early enough you can. Problem is how do you do that? By the time you notice its fubar chances are its fubar.

    Most used may have at most 1yr warranty and don't pay labor. When remans are usually at 3yrs and pay labor. And it really depends on who does the the rebuild. I know at my work the chrysler engines have almost all new parts. It really sucks pulling an engine. Than having to do it again cuz the lkq (or what ever junk yard) engines end up being crap.

    Its a autowrecking place. Toyota specialist. A REMAN... its about 300 more for it. And has a 18 month warranty. Im having a certified mechanic put it in but im not sure if its better to put a used 40,000 mile engine or a refurbished

    in that case I'd go used. Make sure they offer a warranty. Compression and leakdown test the donor if possible.

    Agree.

    That being said, in my experience selling rebuilt engines at NAPA and Kragen, I would rather have a low mileage salvage engine than a parts store engine. NONE of the parts store engines held up. NONE of them! That includes the ATK rebuilts that I special ordered at customer's request.

    The best would be to get your's rebuilt locally by someone you trust. Given the design of the 4.0 V6, and the fact that you probably don't hang out with engine machinists (you would be asking them this question, not us), it's not likely that this is a realistic option for you.

    A couple of local mechanics have said good things about Densmore and Jasper engines, but I have no personal experience.

    Coming from a guy who has rebuilt many many engines, I don't see how a used motor would ever be better than a rebuilt one. I would rather have one that has all new pistons, rings, bearings, etc., than one that already has 40,000 miles of wear.

    That being said, it all depends on who does the rebuild. If someone does a hack work job it probably won't last long.

    A good rebuilt engine will be like new, or in some cases when rebuilt for a specific purpose, better than new.

    Used is used, depending on how honest or well taken care of the original engine by the seller you are taking more of a risk but for usually less money. Some places offer a short warranty on used engines.

    If you rebuild the engine you just have to be sure you stay within the factory tolerances, and don't skimp on anything.

    From what I'm reading, it really boils down to the $ you want to spend . Get a junk yard pull out,don't know how and why it's there, get a reman engine with some warranty, still taking the chance it's fails or get a certified engine from dealer have them put in and get a Toyota warranty, also why engine swing, I overhauled my Mazada engine with a import mechanic ,years ago it had over 160,000 miles on it, broke the timing belt, we overhauled it ,I STILL have this truck with the overhaul in it it now has 445,000 miles on it and my son still uses it everyday. if you decided to overhaul it make sure it's a import specialist, and a good shop and not a shade tree mechanic.
