Resale on a 4 cylinder worse than a 6 cylinder?

Been asking a bunch if questions lately because I haven't made a choice yet. I'm eying a 4 cylinder convience package 4x4 access cab.

I've looked at resale and see 4 cylinders are quite a bit cheaper, although they are only $1,535 cheaper when new vs. the V6.

The question is based purely on resale, not what you feel
Is better. Is there a weaker resale value with the 4 cylinders?

I could see resale being less on a 4 banger. Once it gets old and worn ou it will be pretty gutless in these fat tacomas. The v6 will always have more power. Even when it's old and tired it will still have solid power. That's my take on it...

They are both going to be good for resale, but I would think that the 6 would do better. Dependability is strong in both, so then you would have to look at demand. More people are looking for a bigger engine for whatever reason, towing, speed, etc.

Are you worried about when you decide to sell?

I see a 2011 with 19,000 miles (same options) going for $23,918 at a local dealer. The sticker on the new 2013 im looking at is stickered at $27,491 (minus $376 for the running boards I don't want). Granted this isn't the out the door price. (I would love to here your opinion as to how low I can get that-the sales guy said between $1-$1,500 off).

Im worried that I may want to trade in in a few years for a DC and want maximum value. A DC now isn't going to happen, I prefer new, please don't factor in your response.

My serious advice: It will cost you a TON more in the long run to get two trucks than it will to pay off the first one in the configuration you know you want. Even if you only lose $1,000 on resale (not likely) you still may end up starting all over with a brand new truck, again. . . Just drive em both and get what you want the first time. Resale value is higher on DC that AC I believe as well. Not that it will make much difference if you end up buying twice.

Only catch to all this planning? The Tacoma will likely get a redesign in 2015 (the platform will be 10 years old by then). A few things might happen:

- You might love the 3rd gen Taco.
- You might like the 2nd gen better.
- The 3rd gen may get something like a 3.0L turbo engine to meet tighter CAFE standards.
- There may be reliability issues with first-year models.

Cant go wrong with it, had mine almost 2 years and zero complaints. Unless you are towing heavy things, a 4 banger will do everything you need it to without any issues. The 2.7 is modeled after the 22re I believe so that should be enough to tell you about how reliable they are. Both engines are great and you cannot go wrong with either.

I don't really care about resale value, I will be driving this truck for a very long time. By the time it gets old and wears out, there wont be much to brag about for resale on any 2nd generation, V6 or I4.

How much money will you save in gas with a 4cyl vs resale? How will resale trends change as gas prices go up? All I know is my truck is over 3 years old and kbb puts the value of my truck within 4k of what i paid for it. If I sold it today it would have cost me under a $100 a month to own a new truck, now that's a steal.

Only problem is like my truck too much to sell it

i would say yes. the only time the 4banger was actually the better deal, was in the 90's, back when the tacoma was just called the pickup. in the case of the 22re (4cyl) vs the 3vze (v6). the 4cyl had way better resale all day long, even till this day. the 3.slow was a horrible design back then and was easily prone to blowing head gaskets.

Go for whatever fits your needs now. Why do you want a double cab? Got kids that need to ride in the back seat?

Rather than relying on the subjective opinions of others, take a test drive in a 4 cylinder 4x4 access cab and see if it has enough power for your needs. It's more powerful than 4 cylinder pickups of past generations, but it also has the worst weight to power ratio of any vehicle today in Toyota's lineup. Even a Scion iQ is faster:

Seems to be going against the grain, but "been-there-done-that", and fully agree with Buzzard. Always look out at least 3-5 years on what you need, otherwise you end up in a trade deal where you will lose money over doing it right the first time.

Other factors definitely need to be considered, but since you posted as "resale..", the financial aspects are high on your priority list.

It'll also depend what part of the country you're in. 4 cylinders and more basic trucks are more popular in the Northeast like Boston and Upstate New York.

For the 4 banger, The savings in (gas + insurance + initial cost) x. The amount of time you own it will most like cover the difference in resale value vs the V6.

But who cares, drive what you want.
