i just noticed some surface rust appearing on the corner of my rear bumper, right by the tail pipe. the rest of the bumper is in great condition, even the back side is rust free. whats the best way to treat this and prevent it??:confused::confused:

It just happens from water. Use chrome polish, it will not only shine it up nice but remove that crap you see. I had a Chevy Colorado for 6 years and that stuff never failed to clean up the bumpers nice.

My bumper was like that when I picked it up from the dealer. I made them change it.

I've got a ton of it on mine. Nothing for me to do, but wait until summer comes around for warm dry weather.

Mine gets rusty from the salt on the roads during winter. I have a 2010 access cab. I think there's a recall for that but I put my trailer plug in the bumper so I don't think I can get it replaced. I used wd 40 today on it with a rag and it came right off. It only happens to me in the winter.

For Easy chrome clean up and rust removal from an era when the more chrome the better use chrome cleaner/polish (I like the turtle wax product) and 0000 steel wool. This combination works miracles. Do not use on stainless steel or anodized aluminum.

This happens to me every winter too. I'll try the suggestions here.

I'm also going to look into sand blasting and powder coating the bumper. That may work too.

You could color match paint it. Priming with a rust resistant primer and then painting to match would give a better looking, easier to repair and longer lasting result.

How would that adhere to chrome without sandblasting it first? I'm just afraid that the rear bumper get so much abuse (my foot and loading into the bed) that the paint would chip quickly.

Best to have it dechromed at a place that rechromes bumpers. Put a step plate of rubber or plastic in the high wear areas.

Had this on my 2004 TRD and the best and cheapest sollution is to use a cloth and WD40. Rub like crazy and as long as the chrome is not pitted or rusted through you should buff it right out without any problems. I treated my chrome bumpers with WD40 all the time and they always shined! I cant count how many people asked how I kept them from rusting out which is common in my neck of the woods.

Anytime you see a rust stain start hit it with WD40. I also kept the back side of the bumpers coated too!!

I had the same issue on my 2010 Access Cab, would only happen in the winter when the salt was on the road. Got sick of having to contently take care of it so i fixed it with linex.

I painted mine, sanded really well with an orbital sander and used self etching primer. Still going strong after a couple years.

I also put some bedliner down where I step a lot.

    I'll study both options.

TSB leaves a bad taste with me because the local dealers are such dinks about doing them.

Painting or coating it just seems like a good nuclear option if I run out of other solutions.

I live in the mountains of Colorado. I've got discoloration on chrome that Mother's won't take off. Is it from Mag Chloride used on roads? How do you get rid of it?

you can use kitchen aluminum foil to polish chrome and remove rust.
    One of these
    [IMG]
Just crunch up some foil, deep in warm water and rub the place where chrome is rusting. You can try on small area first.

I saw that trick on American Restorations show and it works.
