I want to get a 2 place sled deck built for my Tacoma. I've seen 1 place decks for them over the bed but I always haul 2 sleds so I want a 2 place. Before people start posting get a trailer or a bigger truck I don't care, I want to do this because it would look wicked and it would be different. I found a company to build it and they can make it expandable for 2 sleds and I can slide it I'm when not using it. I'm going to put airbags in for weight but it should just be over weight because the 2 sleds weigh about 450 lb and my weight limit is 1400 lb so if have about 1000 lb in sleds and gear which would give me 400 lb to build the deck. The thing I'm worried about is if the sled being about a foot over each side with the weight on it, and if the truck would ride ok.

Keep in mind your passengers and you need to be factored in to that leftover 400 lbs also...

I don't care either then, just stay out of Canada with it. What you are proposing is dangerous and illegal for good reason.

You already stated that you dont care what we think so what are you actually asking? If we say yes the weight over the sides is too much and you should get a trailer, then you already stated what you think of that advice.

BTW, a typical mountain sled is still going to hang off the back of a longbed by about 5 feet so the weight capacity of the bed is not what you think it is due to the weight distribution.

I didn't mean it like that I just wanted to hear if people thought it was possible and to know if it would be safe, and not to just get a bunch of posts to use trailers or bigger rig.

also the weight of 1400 lb is the payload of the truck and I thought that was just the weight allowed in the bed of pickup

Well, I'd like to see a few pics of sled decks on tacomas.
I pull a trailer, though a lot of full size trucks around here have decks for quads and sleds, and I have yet to see a nice deck on a taco. Did see a 2x6 special, and it seemed to work, just wonder why I haven't seen an aluminium one yet, perhaps mounting issues? Can't imagine why with a plastic box.
But to consider a double deck for a taco?
    Way too wide; think safety
    Way too heavy; think capability
Way too unbalanced; driving in winter conditions
Way too big; think wind resistance

Unless its only done for show, or you are in a parade, get a single size deck.
You could load 2 dirt bikes on it in the summer. Post pics.

    Cheers

Fair enough, I wasn't intending to be flat out rude either. I hope I didn't come across that way. If I did I appologize.

No, it includes passengers, add-on acessories, whatever gear and tools stashed behind the seat..., it all adds up. IIRC, the tacomas payload rating allows for the weight of fuel separately, where other don't necessarily.

Bottom line though, while you'd be overweight (and thats not good or legal) I'd be even more concerned about the weight distribution and balance. Thats a lot of weight to have that high up on a truck this size/weight, and the rear overhang will take a lot of weight off the front axle as well. What reason do you have against a sled trailer? Its pretty much the only good and legal way to haul 2 or more sleds with a tacoma.

Never seen one ever on a tacoma or toyota pickup. hilux, 1GEN or 2GEN.
    I don't think I have ever seen a 1GEN or 2GEN tundra with one.
After riding with all the snow & ice built up in the tunnel that will add even more weight.

    Not gonna happen.

All vehicles has a GVWR no matter what the bed capacity is and that is the legal issue.

These are mid size trucks nothing more.

Oh I forgot never mind you dont care what we think about facts.

Personally, I wouldnt consider this in a short bed, but here is a nice single deck in a Tacoma that I would love to put on my Tacoma. This is not my deck, I kept these pics cuz I wanted to build one like this one of these days. Somewhere I have a pic of two selds on a trailer behind my taco but I cannot find it.

haha this is just a bad idea. you'll be way over weight by the time you add gear, and people, 450lbs/sled seems light too...

I realize it won't work now that I tried measuring everything up, it was just a idea i was thinking of before really looking at it, but I'm gona try to build a nice single sled deck for the back of it

Sled decks are cool but it wouldn't be safe with a mid size truck and a short bed. The weight distribution would be way off and the height of the weight compared to the narrow wheel stance is a recipe for disaster.

Edit: I didn't read all the posts before posting. A single place should be fine but I still wouldn't do it with a short bed. You say you always bring 2 sleds so you'll need a trailer anyway. You're still gonna need a trailer so why not just forget the deck?

So does a sled deck replace the tailgate because the tailgate can only support so much weight?

I know you don't want to hear about trailers, but even after seeing the pics of that single deck I would be afraid to drive that thing around.
I know trailers can be a pain, espicially to store, I snowmobile a lot and bought a covered 2 sled Triton aluminum trailer.
They can be found used for a good price, I store to sleds in it all summer instead of them taking up room in my garage or sitting out side, I don't have to worry about them getting full of salt etc. or covers ripping in the wind when having the sled in the bed and they are easy to load and unload.
I can appreciate your idea, but I think the pros of a trailer fair out weighs the cons.

    Shawn.
