whoops, I chose 5k... I wasn't thinking about it being the first oil change. First oil change I'd do at 3k or less, engine is still breaking in.... after that, 5k

The dealership said do it at 5000 but i did mine right after the break in period (500miles) was over and switched to synthetic

I have about 800 miles on my 09 v6. The manual says 5000 mile intervals so thats what I plan to do, but I'll do it at 2500 and then again at 5000 - just for good measure.

a dealer i'm about to buy my TACO from told me that the first 2 oil changes are on them. so i'll do it at 500 since its free...but the tech told me 2000 for the first and said anything before that is a waste of time and money. there are no metal shavings, etc.. in the oil. Breaking in an engine is old school thought in 2009???

we'll see about that, when i pick mine up on saturday i'll make sure to do it at 500 miles and i wonder if i can watch them do it and see for myself.

DO NOT use break in oil for 3k miles!!!! Not intended for this! You are supposed to drain that type out after like 20min of running it. That is for the very first start only of a brand new engine.

Yours has been run/tested already so just use regular oil. A lot of metal still coming off internally so a good rule of thumb is change at 1k, 3k, then every 3-5k, after. I personally think 4-5k is fine for the regular intervals. 3k is a standard created by the oil industry.

    secret stuff.
Well, everyone seems to have vastly differing opinions on this, so here's mine...

I think it will do no harm to change the oil after the first 1K miles or so if you are worried about initial break in contamination, if anything I would be more apt to change the filter. The oil is only as good as the filter cleaning it- and I am not eluding to lubricating properties, viscosities, synth vs. dino, or all other important factors that can be talked about and beat to death about oil itself. Run dino or syth, whatever makes you sleep better at night. I would make sure the engine was fully broken in to your satisfaction before running synthetic. Above all, just follow factory recommendations on the oil change interval, they want the product to perform and last hopefully as long as you do.
If you have a new truck and the oil is getting dark and dirty before the oil change interval is due- consider a better air filter, oil filter, or a better oil. The only reason we have to change oil is for two factors- 1)contamination(dirt, water, acids, etc.) and 2)additives in the oil that are breaking down. Oil itself under normal use does not break down, that's why we recycle and reuse it over and over.

    Who told you this crap?

Unless the owners manual calls out to specifically use synthetics only, interchanging between synthetics and dino is negligible in terms of harm to the engines of modern vehicles.

It is almost like being in the "Dark Ages' with some of the myths being perpetuated in this thread.

To go a step further, synthetics and dinos can be mixed without issues. In fact they sell it that way in synthetic blends.

3k for the first, and every 3k after that if you use normal 5w30, 5k if you use synthetic. Im assuming you bought your truck brand new, If so, and they didnt tell you, your fist oil change is free on any toyota/scion you buy.

    My $0.02 FWIW:

    1) I did my first oil change at 5K - because that's when Toyota says to do it. I don't believe these trucks are shipped with "break-in oil" in them - otherwise Toyota would not specify an initial change interval of 5K miles. As someone else said... why would they specify something that would harm your engine - when they're the one's on the hook for fixing it if something goes wrong in the first 60K miles (powertrain warranty)?

    2) Most salesmen and many "mechanics" at dealerships don't know jack sh!t. Don't take their words as fact just because they wear a shirt with a Toyota logo on it. Trust the manual. The information in there comes straight from the engineers who designed and built the truck.

    3) You can go back & forth between mineral and synthetic oil all you want. It's doesn't hurt a thing either way. Otherwise, there would be no such thing as synthetic blends.

if youe tryin to go syntehtic...change it at 1000mls with dino...then at 5000mls change over to synthetic...the first 5000mls need to be dino for break in of the engine

I'm old school too. But I waited till almost 2,000 miles then I changed it.
As for which oil, the dino/synthetic debate is dead!!!! They both do the same job, can be mixed, won't affect break in.
    Just your pocket book :D

Same on filters...... Change your oil & filter on a regular basis :bananadance:

I changed mine at the recommended 5000 miles

and they recommended doing the 2 first with regular oil, so I'll change to syntec at the 3rd

whatever my dealer says will help me for warranty later. If I fight and request otherwise, they could fight back when I got for warranty work

Does changing your oil yourself affect the warranty at all?

DIY oil changes (and other routine maintenance) does NOT affect your warranty, as long as you follow the maintenance guidelines.

Keep good records, and keep the receipts showing you bought the oil around the time you did the oil change.
