How did you mock up the cardboard bumper to essentially duplicate a CBI offroad bumper? Did you use an actual one as a template or did you do it all by looks and eyeballing it?

just eyeballed it. comparing the two in person there is a lot different, it was just the general look that i love, so i interpreted it in my own way.

Next bumper for the front wont be like the first one.

Everything fits. Taking a little break. I've popped the bumper off and I'm currently finishing up the welds!

Haven't gotten a lot done in the past couple days. School. But this afternoon is my last class

    :yay:

And then It's time to buckle down.

Building the tire swing out this afternoon if I don't faint from exhaustion!

Anyway, these are some pictures I snapped the other day.

(I know not the safest thing to do, but I put some heavy truck chocks up front as well as 4wd in 1st gear, It wasn't going anywhere.)

Damn this thing is sexy! 2 questions, what thickness metal did you use for each bumper? And what kinda welding are you doin, MIG, TIG? You may have said both these things before but I've already read through the thread once and that took me long enough!

    Thanks mang!

For the front bumper I used 5/16" plate for the winch mount (all I could get my hands on) and 3/16" for the actual bumper shell.

For the rear the mounting plates are 1/4" plate, and the rest is 3/16". Looking back, and in the future I'm going to use thicker metal for the mounting plates in the rear.

As for welding the front bumper was tig welded, and the rear I did with a mig. Much faster...

    I should probably consolidate everything...

Gotcha, I'm a little surprised, you don't think the 1/4" mounts I the rear are heavy enough to take the load? And also, I'm completely new to welding, is one (MIG v. TIG) much stronger? Cuz from my understanding MIG is easier and cheaper to do, so I'm just wondering there's a reason to TIG weld it all instead?

They're plenty strong, but there is an aspect of the design that would benefit from thicker mounting plates.

As far as which one is better, they are both great. Tig machines allow you to run a little hotter generally compared to a similar sized mig machine which makes tigs great for metals like aluminum and bronze which dissipate heat so quick. The trade off being that tig is much slower, and migs allow for quick production and give you a free hand which is great for fabrication. Migs feed filet wire in automatically, tig you do by hand.

    Hope this helps!

Ya it deff does! Cuz if I understand you correctly, sense I'm lookin to mostly only do steel welding for now, bumpers, sliders maybe skids etc.. I only need to MIG which is faster but just as strong correct?
