This thread has a lot of heat to it! The fact that Toyota doesn't provide an engine that meets the needs of everyone is probably common throughout the auto industry. IMO we all should want a motor that provides very high torque and unlimited mileage. Ultimately, we need to get away from paying the oil companies for every mile we drive.

I did the Dodge Cummings Diesel thing for 18 years with a 3/4 ton 4x4. That 6 cylinder 12 valve Cummins was bullet proof....the rest of the Dodge..Not so much!

Cummings also makes a 4 cylinder turbo diesel (the 6 cylinder turbo diesel weighs almost 1000lbs!) The 4 cylinder is basically the 6 with 2 cylinders missing and has the same bore/stroke. That engine is commonly used in step vans (bread trucks, delivery vans, etc. ) and that is a popular engine for a Jeep diesel conversion. There are some real strengths to a diesel setup but they're not for everyone.

I got rid of my diesel powered Dodge and replaced it with a 4 cylinder Tacoma 5-speed. I like simple vehicles and I think that is one area where Toyota's can shine. They don't "over-engineer" their basic trucks and is one of the greatest assets of that design. Simple is good.

I also own a Jeep (2003 TJ) with the 4.0 liter in-line 6 cylinder. That was a solid motor but they stopped making it in 2006 and replaced it with a V6 for the JK series in 2007.
A diesel option for a Jeep has some merit but I'm not sure Chrysler can pull it off.

The new diesel for Jeep is supplied by VM Motori, engine code A630. My company is the only US distributor for their off highway products. So I work with their 4.2l inline 6 all the time, since they power equipment for loading C130's. Check out the Halvorsen Loader. If you want any specific info on their products pm me.

I ended up going with a Cayenne Diesel. I sell them so it really was the best way to go for me. Drive what you sell is a good rule of thumb, plus I can partially write it off.
Thanks for all of the comments. They did make a difference in my decision. I think that the sketcky JEEP build quality and dependability made me take another look. Porsche has been first or second in dependability for 6 years straight.
I traded in a 2013 A3 Diesel and my truck.
I'm selling my Pelfreybuilt front bumper and BAMF Slider Bars if anyone(preferably in the California/cheaper shipping) is interested. I kept the Rigid 21" light bar

Once again, there is no diesel Hilux in Mexico, not even a 4x4 is offered. Currently in Mexico you can get the VW Amarok, Mitsubishi LP200, the smaller Nissan NP300, and for the ballers and cool factor the Land Rover Defender with the 2.2. I have driven the Amarok 4x4 on the street and gravel, and it drives sweet. It drives like a jetta, steering wheel doesn't feel like a truck, very accurate and responsive. I have driven the gas Hilux 2wd also, it drives like an old school truck. Less comfortable than my taco, but I like the Hilux classic truck suspension feel.

If a diesel Hilux 4x4 came to Mexico I would buy immediately. My close friend has a fleet in Liberia in Africa in very rough terrain and another in Honduras, the D4D is bullet proof. I hear the taxi vans in India regularly go 1 million miles with only regular maintenance no problem. The 1GR is also great and reliable imo, but you can't compare the longevity, low rpm torque and efficiency of the D4D. But if it came to the USA, would it be the same with all the CARB crap? probably not.

I think the reason it's not in the USA is the cost to pass califag CARB which is specially tough on diesel emissions, fitting it in the Tacoma and San Antonio plant mods that would be required, hundreds of million$$$. In Mexico I think it's a different reason though, if you want a nice 4x4 Toyota or Nissan you have to get the top of the line Taco, Tundra, Frontier, Titan only offered in gas, and no bartering on price with new vehicles in Mexico. They don't have to worry about the EPA and Mexico is a big market but the diesels only go to Guatemala and south. I think Toyota knows that a D4D vehicle would probably be on the road for decades in Mexico with some Mexican elbow grease and rigging, lol. Where a gas model will have a much shorter life. That's just my paranoid theory why they're not in Mexico.

There is one way around the EPA laws to drive a Mexican vehicle in the USA. If you have a house or property in Mexico like I do and claim it as your main residence you can legally cross your Mexican plated vehicle into the USA as an American Citizen. So you could keep it in the USA and take it back to Mexico for warranty work and annual registration etc, but technically your supposed to be living in Mexico and not have the truck in the USA permanently, only visiting. My cousin drives his Mexican plated Cummins Ram in the USA, and he spends most of his time in San Antonio since the violence got real bad in Mexico. His Cummins is new but has none of the EPA bs the Americna trucks have.

I hope the Ram 1500 is offered in all trim models including work trucks and not just the more expensive ones like the Cherokee. The Ram is a done deal, it's on the Ram website, it's coming. The engine have been doing good around the world for a couple of years now. Lets see how it does with all the CARB crap and the new tranny, since it is a Chrysler after all. If the Ram succeeds I think it will open the door for midsize and other 1/2 ton diesels. There's a lot of Ram loyalists(even though they suck, lol), so lets keep our fingers crossed. A Ram Powerwagon that gets 28-30mpg HW actually sounds bad ass.

There's signs that they will come in the near future though. Ford just dropped a lot of $$ to pass CARB with the Transit 3.2 diesel that's in the new world Ranger, bring that Ranger and I'll buy it, or even put it in a new F150, its estimated to have 400lbs torque in US trim. I'll take that over the RAM or Jeep models any day. The new Colorado or whatever they will call it is also coming to the USA, hopefully it will come with the 2.8 world engine with 350lbs since the diesel Cruze is almost out. We have the new Colorado in Mexico but no diesel. And Mercedes is bringing a smaller diesel also in the GLK bluetec 250, it's a little 2.1 with a monster 370lbs, awesome. But if they put the D4D in the Taco one day, that will be the perfect vehicle for me.

In the end it was no to the Jeep. A friend of mine whose opinion I respect told me that if I did get the Jeep he would never speak to me again. He had a horrible experience in regard to dependability. He also said if you buy an Italian diesel engine you are crazy.
I ended up gettting these two and a new car trailer

Man, the OP was complaining about the Taco seats being "evil and cruel" ???

I just got back from a solo trip to Pennsylvania three hours ago, drove 1670 miles in 31 hours on I-70, 29 hours of it in the saddle stopping only for fuel and a couple piss stops, two 1-hour naps at rest areas. And I seem to be doing fine, even mowed the dang lawn when I got back. OP, you gotta toughen up son.
