Probie here, I'm looking at buying my first Tacoma and I have a few questions. I've decided that I want a PreRunner and that's pretty much it. I think a 4 cyl. is prob the best engine for me as I will never be hauling anything but the V6 does feel pretty peppy and fun.

THe ideal truck for me would be a 4 cyl access cab PreRunner but every dealer I go to says that this truck doesn't exist anymore.

So my options are the 4 cyl DC or the V6 Access.

My main concerns are reliability and gas mileage.

I have gotten a quote for a 4 cyl DC PR for $23k with the convenience pkg and change and about $2k more for the V6 w/ Sr5.

Any insight anyone might have would be greatly appreciated and would help put my mind at ease!

Tl;dr - I need help deciding on my first Tacoma purchase

I was able to put one together on the site and I know that is based off the ZIP you're in. So one would think that it does in fact exist.

    Bingo.

Plug in your own zip code and try to build it.
If you can, then your dealer just doesn't have one and doesn't want to order one.

If you can't build it, then it means that the Toyota distributorship for your region does not offer it. This is a common problem for Texas and the Southeast that are served by Gulf States Toyota.

This poster is correct. The dealership would rather sell you something that is already on their lot then to order something in. Don't fall for it. Go and find what you're looking for, I'm sure you'll find it.

Do not let them talk you into getting what you do not want. I went to two dealers with my list of what I wanted. The first one tried that same crap and I walked. The second one said the same thing until I told them I would not settle... They located one at another dealer and trucked it in the next day.

2012 Access Cab 4 cylinder prerunner.

I went to "Build my Tacoma" and was able to select 2013 Access Cab, Prerunner, 4 cylinder, auto trans. (manual was not an option). I could also add the convenience package or SR5 package.

    Hope this helps.

The crappy Toyota web site only lets you build the trucks they want to send to your zip code. Look on Yahoo! Autos. That site will let you build any configuration of Tacoma that the factory builds, plus it gives retail & invoice prices. Your dealer can do a lot to lot transfer, they just don't want to.

The strange thing is that about 4 dealerships in MD so far have told me that they are unable to get that model/configuration. That's what's leading me to my other questions. I guess I'll have to do more calling around today.

When I went to buy my Tacoma, I wanted the same thing. None were in stock anywhere in the state. (August 08). Dealer looked up the availablity of 09's, and there were only 20 units scheduled to be built and sent out to the Southeast region. I believe that is ten states! My dealer told me there was one 4cyl, Access Cab Prerunner being built right then, but they would never order this truck since "everyone" wanted a 6 cyl. But they ordered it for me, end of story.

That has kind of been lost over the years hasn't it.

Nope, got mine:D but yeah, 08 was last time for 5 spd reg cab prerunners with buckets, not sure how much farther they went in other models. Just seems stupid to call it SR5 and all it amounts to is a badge, chrome bumper/grill, color matched flares & adj int wiper stalk and not at least get a 5 spd tranny. Still should be able to order one how you want it and wait on it if they still have all the shit, just in different models.

The SR5 has become over the years "a package" vs a sign it was a 5 speed manual.

I have seen a few around here, socal, but they are very rare. Even more so than the 05-11 Prerunner Access Cab 4 cyl. The 2012 is only available with an automatic, the previous were only available in manual.
Op, I am sure you can find a used one somewhere near you.

No, you can only build a 4 cyl with the single cab. I tried it before buying my truck. You can chose access cab first, but when you pick the 4 cyl powertrain it dumps you back to single cab building. (but never says, "you can't get that". Pretty lame Toyota.

Just tried it... works fine with the 4x2 Prerunner Access Cab. 2.7 is standard, 4.0 is optional.

It all depends what ZIP Code you enter.
