When ever I press in my clutch pedal I hear a whining noise. It has gotten a bit louder of late. Doesn't matter if I'm moving or not, just simply depressing the clutch of my manual tranny makes a high pitched whine. It goes away completely when I release the clutch and begin moving. I bought the truck used, and didn't pay much attention to it in the beginning, but now that it's getting louder I'm starting to worry. Any ideas?

possible throwout bearing issue. Mine does it as well on my 1st gen and has for the last 80 thousand miles with no issues. My clutch disc however is beginning to slip so I am replacing the throwout bearing when I replace the clutch.

was hearing similar, but seems that most I hear about throwout bearing issues is that they whine when the clutch ISN'T pressed if going bad..perhaps I read wrong?

Release bearing save up for a clutch assembly.

what kinda money we talking about here? i know it's gonna cost, replacing a clutch is out of my meager mechanical skills league, but I was curious of ballpark figures?

also, was planning on doing a differential and tranny oil change this weekend...will the tranny oil change be a waste of money or might it be a possible delay tactic for the big money item (clutch replacement)?

Yea definitely sounds like a release bearing. If you do it yourself I think you can do it under $500 for the whole clutch assembly, if not you're probably looking at about a grand I think

mine made a whine when I would shift & the pitch would change with RPM, it was the throw out bearing.
I purchased this one from rock auto for $100 http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1963124&cc=1431546 and installed it in a day. most clutch kits come with a throw out bearing, disc, pressure plate & disc alignment tool. you can change the gear oil now or later, doesn't matter & it won't do anything for the whine.

how many miles on your truck btw?

It's not going to be a waste of money since you can change your clutch without opening the trans later. But that's not going to fix or delay your problem either because trans fluid has nothing to do with the clutch (dry clutch)

if you are going to tear it down that far may want to look at replacing other wear items.

pilot bearing? pilot goes in center of flywheel. Unless you just want to upgrade your clutch or if it has been toasted you might be good.

dont forget to throw some grease on the hydrostatic redenplater, don't want that getting hung up & there's no grease fitting on it anyway
