Got alot I want to do but we'll see, that's what the forum is for...
Unfortunately financially I can not afford to keep my Taco. Sucks that I only owe 13k on an 08 w/ 60k miles but my job is an hour each way drive. Gas w/ truck payment is over $700 a month. It has to go! My son's daycare is 1100 alone, ouch. Anyway, enough of my crying. I love stick, now what to buy after owning exactly what I have always wanted, very usable and practical? I have to stay under 5k, your thoughts???

    -Subaru wagon?
    -Mid 90's Taco manual?

Just a few little things. It's my DD
You won't be happy with any taco. I had a 2002 single cab 4 cyl 5 speed. Best mpg was 22-24. I drive a little over 100 miles a day and have done for a long time. I would recommend a civic, corolla anything in that nature. 35-39 mpg. Save lots of $$$.

if you like subarus, i used to have a 5 speed legacy gt(non turbo 2.5l) wagon. i miss that thing all the time, reliable, peppy, near 30 mpg. you can pick them up for cheap and if taken care of should last 300k miles easily. the 2.5 boxer is a beast

I love them also, good call but having a truck is nice to pick up oddly shaped items... Thanks for the info.

If you are getting rid of the tacoma because of gas costs I wouldn't settle for anything that gets less than maybe 27 mpg's average. You didn't say how big it needs to be, but like the others said I wouldn't buy another tacoma. If you need 4 doors and need the absolute best mpg's I'd say something like a 4 door civic or corolla or maybe a 4 cylinder accord or camry.

From the April 2013 Annual Auto Issue of Consumer Reports: Honda Civic sedan, Hyundai Elantra sedan, Mazda 3, Nissan Sentra, Pontiac Vibe, Subaru Impreza sedan (non-turbo), Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix. Good luck finding a decent car or truck for under $5000.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Jetta TDI, they are diesel but get exceptional mileage. My old man has one and it averages 50-55mpg. They are fun to drive too with the manual gearbox, and aren't as gay looking as a Prius.

Civic or Corrolla. Camry is bigger but actually great on gas also.
If you are into diesels, Jetta TDi will give great mileage - not sure if you can get a reliable one for under $5k though. The older ones will have too many miles.

Subarus run forever. They're much cheaper on gas, and the turbos pull very nicely. The stick will get better Milage, at least the ones I've known (all older than 07).
Also, they're great fun in snow or dirt.

Get a good used Saturn. Great mileage, and they are going cheap now.

    Get a toyota SUPRA!!!
The $$$ in time you save will justify the expense.
    Just kidding.
Any Toyota car-Camry.Corolla ect will save gas and maitenance expense.
    Honda's are good too.
Anything made by VW(from personal experience)-Stay away from.
If anything goes wrong(and it will) cost BIG $$ to repair.

Why not lease a new taco till your finances improve. Half the payments and you can get a brand new truck. Not the best long term solution but near term it's win win.

Daycare costing more than your truck? You clearly don't have your priorities right. :D

On a serious note, how much of the $700 is fuel and how much is the truck payment?
