When I had a plug, I'd put it on top of the new filter.
Plug went in before the filter went on.
Now I just remember to close the Fumoto before changing the filter.

Likewise with the oil, radiator, or any other cap in the engine compartment... they go on top of the hood latch. Can't close the hood without putting the cap back on.

Seven years on my fumoto drain valve. I still take the skid plate off for the oil filter.

Shit, damn 6.4 PS holds 14 qts. I used a 5 gallon bucket. PITA though! Needed a larger catch pan. Maybe the fumoto makes sense! :p

Till gasket meets base and a 1/2 turn more. I never need a wrench to take my filters off.

    Ditto.

Never doubled one because of this practice, but in 40 years, I've had 4 or 5 stick to the block. Happened most recently on my motorcycle, the Duramax, and Tundra.

    It makes it easier! :p

In the end if you're the only one doing it, do what works best for you, but I think it'd save you some effort.

    Hand tighten only.
I bring it into contact and then hand-crank 3/4 to 1 turn beyond.

I do need a wrench to remove, but never use one to install... especially with a strap wrench, it's too easy to collapse the can and damage the element.

    True true.

I used to use a cap wrench to install, and still do on my bike, but never more than 1 turn beyond contact.
The Toyota gasket is more of an O-ring, and getting more than 1/2 turn takes a bit of muscle by hand, so that's about all it gets.

OP, as a suggestion, use cardboard instead of newspaper as a base. Wind won't affect it as much.

Not a prude nor religious, but you lose a lot of credibility with your GD this and GD that. You sound like an uneducated loser.
