Mike, 2009-2011 or 2012: 'AUTO LSD' is a 2WD feature that doesn't cut engine output while it is limiting slip, where as TRAC does (limit engine output in H2).

In H4, TRAC doesn't have any output regulation (like AUTO LSD in H2).

What I think they changed in 2013 or 12 maybe is adding AUTO LSD in H4, and changing TRAC to do the same thing it does in H2 (limited slip with engine output regulation)...?

In H4, if you press the VSC button once (not hold down)... does an AUTO LSD light come on?

In mine, that does nothing... since I am already in an AUTO LSD-like condition. Mine, the AUTO LSD only can be on in H2, and my H4 normally is already in an AUTO LSD mode, but Toyota called it 'TRAC'.

Now, to answer just your question: THERE IS NO TRACTION CONTROL in Low Range, unless you have the Off Road TRD... and then get A-TRAC (2009 +) and the rear locker. TRAC (or AUTO LSD) in H4 is a BIG improvement in my sand four wheeling and hill climbing trials with my 2010 over my open diff'd 2005 4 door 4WD.

With TRAC in H4 (or AUTO LSD in H4) you can climb grades easier, and travel over deep sand without deflating (or deflating as much if your truck is loaded).

Traction control in 4WD High, really added to my truck's ability off road over my previous two Tacomas which would need to be in low range to do as well climbing, or tires dropped to 15 psi to cross deep sand. I was and still am very impressed with 4WD TRAC/AUTO LSD from Toyota!

    Hi,

Thanks for the help and info guys. I decided to bag the concern about locker, A-TRAC and the rest and just buy a nice 2007 standard cab 4x4 I came across. Only button it has is the clutch start cancel so I guess it doesn't have much in the way of traction control. If need be I'll look into adding a locker as Gino suggests.

    Thanks,

    Mike

It better not be standard on all models. I paid good money for it on my 2012 TRD OR. But it would be a great option for the sport and SR5.

I sometimes wonder if I should have got the Off Road instead of the Sport, but I was a sucker for the Sports hood.

If the Sport would have either ATRAC or a Locker (just one) I would have gotten it but I just couldn't see spending that money on an SR5 with cosmetic upgrades, though the colormatch and scoop do look awesome. But that's just me, to each his own.

Don't you have to have a hydraulic brake booster to have A-TRAC? My 2013 OR has a hydraulic booster...

So I have a '13 TRD sport. It may not have A-TRAC, BUT it has "a track" button by the 4x4 switch. Maybe it's only standard with the Entune Navi option.

So if only TRD Off Roads have Active Traction, does that mean every other trim level has only Passive Traction?

    From Toyota Canada website:

As part of Toyota's Star Safety™ System, all Tacoma models feature the advanced command delivered by Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control — helping to handle slippery conditions on or off-road. 4x4 Access Cab V6 models equipped with the TRD Offroad Package add Active Traction Control.

I just got a DBLB TRD SPORT 4x4 and it def doesn't have ATRAC. Also I would never listen to the sales men as he didn't even know how to put it into 4L and after asking his manager his said just click it over to 4 low while drive and keep going until the beeping stops. errrr ok thanks
