The cutout doesn't kick in if the brake is applied before throttle is advanced.
You can still kill your transmission do a brake stand.

My mother-in-law got one of these settlements for her Camry. Can't remember what it was for but it was only good at the dealer for maintenance and merchandise.

Wooo close one. You know I'm just joking right...?

I read some of the legal documentation it says that counsel will ask for no more than $200 million + an additional $27 million for expenses to pay the legal fees of 85 attorneys (working at multiple firms).

What a societal sham. I don't understand why Toyota settled at $1.1 billion if there is nothing wrong with their designs. This is ridiculous.

Like I said, calculated risk management.
Had it gone before a jury, it could have been tossed out, or it could have been worth $1500 per mailing instead of $55.

The legal teams do mock trials before people who might make up a jury all the time, and they make decisions based on that.
Toyota obviously felt that, even though they did not believe there to be a problem, that a jury would have cost them more than 1.1b.

Just as Ford elected to pay wrongful death claims rather than fix a known problem on the '72/'73 Pinto. The $5 fix done on a recall would have been more costly than paying the families of those killed based on projected accident rates.

So... I got two checks in the mail yesterday. Lets just say my estimate was low and it turns out to have been worth much more than I thought.
