I'm in a tacoma cause a tundra wouldn't fit in my small ass 1 car garage. I bought my double cab after my wife got pregnant and I knew my regular cab '85 toyota wouldn't be the Ideal rig.
Now my wife and I are talking about expanding our family once again and I would choose more room for a pickup. I love my tacoma and will make it work with our second child. I can't afford to buy a tundra now. I am a tacoma lover for sure, love my truck.
The fact that you can pull a good sized trailer with the tundra is great. Ya tacoma (6500lbs) but I wouldn't test that. The tundra has more room and v8 power.
I think sometimes, when my kids get older I'm sure they will want to have friends along on an outing or something well the interior space would be a little more roomy for them too.

    Thanks,

    Brett

Well said, Brett. Excellent point about little friends. My first is a girl and they travel in packs.

Ya, my first is a baby boy. He's almost 14 months now. I would consider the double cab tundra if I were you, I think about my family's future and how cramped they are going to be in my tacoma as the months and years go by especially with a second child for me on the way soon.
I'm not looking foward to 2 car seats in the tacoma, there won't be room for much more after that. Damn. ;)

    Thanks.

    afco,
You are probably tired of reading replies by now, but I voted you go to the Tacoma double cab. My boys are 4yrs and 14mos, so we are firmly in the 2 car seat camp. Last summer I got rid of my gas guzzling F150 super crew and went to the Tacoma double cab. I struggled same as you, but 7 months later I couldn't be happier. No issues with the carseats in the Tacoma, and I'm not a short guy (6' 1"). It's certainly smaller than the F150 was, but love driving the smaller rig on my daily drive. Gas, parking, visibility, you name it. I won't go back. My boys will complain in 12 years when they don't fit so well in the back seat, but I plan to make it theirs when the oldest turns 16, so that should keep the whining to a minimum :)

can you not sell the tundra and pay cash for a decent comuter car that gets 30+ mpg?

get a trailer to tow with the FJ if you ever need to haul anything.

This seems like the best route IMO.

Unfortunately, I live in a rural area of Tennessee and having a truck bed is necessary. Tried to go without one when I drove the FJ and some things were impossible. Originally got the Tundra because doing without the bed of the Tacoma was far too impractical.

I know that either the Tundra or Tacoma will "work" since they are both double cab. I just need to decide if the smaller space and better gas mileage of the Tacoma are acceptable losses/gains to trade away the Tundra's extra space and worse gas mileage.

What if you got your second car seat (if you haven't already) and swap with your dad for a week or two and see if you like it better.

You're right. That's the only way to know for sure if I could see it working for the long run.

I have to agree with keep the Tundra, or trade dad. My 9 month old's car seat is huge. Any new car seat that's worth a damn, and rated good in accidents are pretty large now. So extra space all the way.

Reasons to keep the Tundra are making a lot of sense, at least for now. Since the baby's not due until November, I'm going to see how gas prices do. If the gas is murdering me when it comes time to actually fit both kids in, I can put both kids in the Tacoma and see how we'll it fits into our life.

Thanks to all who gave advice and experience. Much appreciated.
