Hard or Soft Cover?

I've just spent the better part of today looking at tonneau covers, reading threads, checking reviews, etc. Lots of choices out there.

Recently found a Undercover classic near me for fairly cheap. Supposedly in decent shape. Up until then, I was mostly considering soft covers, mainly due to cost.

So, my question is this: having a choice, would you prefer a hard cover or a soft one if they were about the same cost? I see that most of the hard covers lock, which is nice if you keep anything back there. The main advantage of a soft one is not having to take it off if you need access for loading something large.

As I rarely carry anything in the back unless I'm headed somewhere with it (i.e. taking the 4 wheeler to camp), locking isn't really a huge issue for me. I was also looking at several threads discussing certain covers interfering with a bed extender, which I've also been considering. Are hard covers more or less likely to interfere?

I originally bought my Undercover for my regular cab, since it had zero storage space. Between it and the pop n lock I had a 6.5 foot locking trunk that was relatively watertight.

I moved it to my access cab, and still use it regularly. Only downside is that you really need two people to remove / replace it. If I had the $$$ I'd probably replace it with a BAKflip G2

 

I have a soft tri fold one. No complaints. Usually just have it on in the winter.

 

I have the bakflip HD hard cover and to me it's worth every dollar spent. It keeps everything secure and dry in the bed along with the pop and lock tailgate lock.
Best part is you can fold it up and secure it to the back of your cab and still have the ability to use your full bed. The HD is also capable to having a load on top of it as long as it's evenly distributed.

 

I bought a bakflip Roll-X about two weeks ago and love it. I was turned off by the whole velcro thing that other tonneau covers use, which I believe will wear out quickly if you continually roll the cover.

 

I have an undercover flex. It appears to be well made and is very useful. It locks with the pop n lock tailgate.

 

I'd like something like a bakflip, but cost is prohibitive. So, it's used Undercover or new (cheap) tonneau.

 

Go for the Undercover - it should have a good resale if you don't like it. You'd probably get your $ back.

I vote for the Undercover! I have the old style on my 07 and love it, it has never leaked a drop of water. I took a 600 mile trip last year and it rained the whole way, I opened it up when I got there and my luggage was 100% dry. My brother has the SE model on his 2010 and loves it as well. The SE has one knob in the center as opposed to the knob on each side like mine.

 

I have a soft tri fold. Goes on and off in minutes. Its water proof and cheaper.
