Used Toyota Tacomas - mileage and bed length?

I'm looking at used 2nd Gen Toyota Tacomas since they seem to be the closest to a Hilux.

    1. I get pretty wary when the mileage is over 100,000. There's no rational reason behind it though. Are Tacomas pretty bomb proof even into the 150,000+ range? I saw that thread about the million mile Tacoma, currently on ~350,000 miles with some cheap repairs. Is this normal?

    2. I would like to seat 5 people just in case I get passengers (very likely). From what I understand, if I get a crew cab the truck bed will only be 5ft, correct? But if I have the Access Cab the bed will still do ~72" of bed length?

You can get a double cab with a 6 foot bed. They are only autmatic transmission though. If you want a manual you have to stick with the 5 foot bed.

I'd like to stick with the manual for reliability and fuel economy. Are there any strong arguments against the manual in this car though?

What's TOB? Oh wow, so the manual could actually be LESS reliable and long living than the auto?

it is less reliable. the TOB is the throw out bearing. good luck if you buy a manual out of warranty. doesnt happen to everyone, but there have been a bunch of issues with them. now, the 5spd manual on the 4 cyl is bulletproof.

the double cab is the double cab ... the bed comes in 5ft and 6ft length. The Access cab only comes in 6ft. From what you say it sounds like you need the Double Cab

The autos have higher EPA mileage ratings that the manuals.

I have an access cab and there's no way I could get 5 people in it. It's a tight fit for my 120 lb wife who's 5'4.

I just rolled over 170k miles on mine I bought 30k ago. $40 dollars in brakes and a u joint is all I've done to beside oil and transmission fluid changes, so by my experience u can expect about $.01 every 8 miles or so.

Dont get a manual it is worse fuel economy and is less reliable than the automatic. there are rigs on here and other sights that put boat loads of money into there trucks and all of them would do the auto for reliability.

If the truck is at 100k miles then TOB likely isn't going to be a issue until normal replacement with clutch. Automatics do get better mileage. Both have possibilities of having problems. A manual will be cheaper to fix or replace than an auto. Just get what you really like. No regrets.

So it looks like I should shoot for an automatic double cab with extended bed, right?

Bomb proof transmission and engine that could go for 200k+ miles.

    Seats 5 comfortably.

Sleeps 2 in the cab comfortably.

    4WD for off road.

What's the gas mileage on something like this?

I shouldn't really bat an eye at a well maintained truck like this with like 150,000 miles, right? Still plenty of life left in it?

One of the issues would be the weight carrying capacity. It's around 1500lb, right? Not really enough for a camper with indoor shower and toilet, huh? Any reasonable way to upgrade the weight carrying capacity?

or if you want a manual, get a 4cyl. theyre not dogs, they have 4:10 gears from the factory, and you can get a 4cyl double cab. just hard to find.

As mentioned earlier, 6 speed manual in a Double Cab is the worst combination in a Tacoma for mileage. Take a look at my fuelly sig. Lots of data over the last three years.

I wouldn't dare call the manual un-reliable. the early years had tob issues, but I never heard of anyone being stuck on the side of the road for a tob squeak. it has its quirks, but the manual is solid.

the automatic has so far been great, but when it goes, it goes. the manual might lose synchro's over time, might need a clutch replacement every couple hundred thousand miles, but will ALWAYS be driveable if not abused and is maintained.

its the same choice as its always been, except the auto is more competitive than any auto before. it may be good for 300k miles, but when its done, its done. don't let people mislead you by saying the 6-speed is unreliable, as it has no excuse to leave you stranded, as long as there is oil in it and there is friction material on the flywheel.

98k on my 6-speed and zero issues. I believe the "million mile" truck is one of the early models with tob issues

Haven't heard of an auto taco blowing yet... No clutch to replace, no tob to squeak, just change tranny oil every 30k and go...
