Ok I've done so much research I'm starting to get irritated. I have a 2008 tacoma sr5 prerunner. I want to do a 4x4 conversion but need a complete parts list. I get its easier to go and trade it in but time and money is not and issue right now! I love my truck too much to get ride of it so it is worth it to me to do a conversion. So someone please just give me a straight answer of what it would truely take to do the conversion. Thank you. 4clyd, 4x2, no locker,5 speed manual trans. Need more info just ask.

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
They've been building one on Tacoma magazine. I'm pretty sure they have the parts list. It's a free digital magazine, found it here on Tacoma world, pretty cool, and the tech article on 4x4 conversion was done well! Sorry I don't have the link.

If money isn't an issue, I'd trade for a V6 4x4 and spend the time building it up from there.

best bet is to find a donor 4x4 unless you're ok with shelling out what the dealership wants.

    need;

    front diff
    front cv axles
front 4wd wheel bearing hubs (think you can get them fully assembled)
forward driveshaft (front diff to transfercase)
either a 4wd trans or inchworm adapter to mount the transfercase to the prerunner trans (the trans is identical except for the length of the output shaft)
transfercase + front bellhousing to mount the case to the trans (could look into manual fj case conversion via rocksolidtoys)
    4wd y-pipe or custom fab
4wd trans cross-member or custom fab
    rear driveshaft (transfercase to diff)
    4wd ecu
    4wd additional wiring

*note* I think most trucks come pre-wired for everything, I haven't had time to fully take my dash out to be sure, but i've found a bunch of tapped off connections with pre-wired switches.

you will need misc tools and other hardware(bolts, screws, washers, etc)

Good luck on the conversion. For me, that's a big undertaking.

I'm looking forward to the build thread.

    parts and stuff
^^^^^all the same truck. only one documented person has completed this. Wyatt of Rocksolid toys (awsmdc on tw).

the main difference between the 2wd and 4wd that seems to be difficult is the transmission crossmember. they are not located in the same spot on the truck. so a new one has to be fabbed up.

if you do complete this. go with the fj case swap. then u dont have to mess with the 4wd ecu but you will need to wire in a switch for the add actuator on the front diff

If you buy all the parts from Toyota it might up being cheaper to keep your truck and buy a 4x4 Tacoma.

I'm no engineer but it seems the most straightforward way would be to do a solid axle swap.

Now let me ask this. I have the 2.7l four cylinder, with the five speed manual trans. Is that powerful enough to power the conversion plus if I wanted to tow a tent trailer?
