5 spd auto. When I lift off the throttle the truck slows down much quicker than other vehicle I've driven due to it downshifting while coasting. Most vehicles hold the higher gears until you are almost stopped, this does not.
    Normal?
it does have larger, off road tread tires that likely have a lot more drag.
If I'm in 5th it goes down to 4th pretty quickly and then steadily downshifts.
I often have to re-accelerate because it's slowed down too much too fast.

Do not coast in nuetral to try and defeat it downhill

If u wanna rest ur right foot, ur gunna have to use cruise control

U may be able to reset the trans learning curve by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes.......they have some kinda learning trans.

Technology......screwing up old school drivers daily.

I hate it, and I hate abs......but those are my only 2 gripes, and I have an abs killswitch, so now im down to 1 complaint I guess

I know what engine braking is, this is clearly the tranny downshifting.

Personally, coming from 17+years of driving only manuals, I LIKE that the truck downshifts the auto and doesnt coast along when you take your foot off the gas, even so I am still changing brake pads in half the mileage I did on my stick taco. I can't imagine how short the pad life would be if this truck didn't slow down when you lift off the throttle...

It's not fukn normal , it's an issue . Mine would come to a stop in less than 1,000' from 60mph by itself with no brakes . Since the re-flash it acts like any other normal automatic-equipped vehicle .

Wtf is it with people on this board thinking shit like this is normal ? Maybe just the age group or lack of fukn experience ?

Probably because it's normal for a TACOMA to do it.. I've owned 2 and they both have done this.

FWIW, my 09 Jeep Rubicon was nearly the same way. My 13 Taco slows down a bit quicker than did my Rubi but they were similar.

I had a built CJ5 with a Turbo 350 that had a VERY VERY low stall converter in and it was very similar. At a stop you had to keep a far amount of brake pedal pressure on it or it would take off on you but for out 4wheeling it was great because you could ease into the throttle without slipping the tires and going downhill did not require nearly as much braking. Was a little doggy off the line though.

I'm not sure what the "stall" is in these auto equipped Tacoma's but, to me, they feel like they have a low stall converter in them or maybe it has something to do with the way they lock-up. I'm not a trans mechanic so I can't answer for certainty but that's what it feels like to me.

I agree, it was very noticeable, especially, at first but after I got used to it I actually really like the auto trans. in my Taco. It sure saves on the brakes if you do a lot of in town driving and out on the freeway I don't notice it at all.

I was told by the dealer the trans had errors , of course that's their normal line of bs . I would assume they just reprogrammed the dumb thing , whatever . It shifts/downshifts a lot like it should now , problem fixed .
There is no reason to put up with manufacturer's not standing behind their products , been a mechanic for 35yrs - Toyota needs to own up to this crap .

I'm curious, why did you have a problem with it decelerating after you took your foot off the throttle? Was it just a personal preference thing or did you feel it was actually hurting something?

I can certainly understand it annoying your driving style but I don't see what it would hurt, if anything, I think it saves on brake wear.

I'm curious as too your point of view on this.

It wasn't just decelerating , it actually downshifted way too early which eventually can lead to trans failure . Odd thing is , it wasn't real consistent and was worse at different times , perhaps due to fluid temperature . Felt as if the parking brake was partially engaged , which I checked by taking the rear wheels off and verifying the cable wasn't pulling on the actuator arms . This is on an '08 w/less than 15k on the clock , btw .

    That's interesting.

My 13 decels pretty damn rapidly once you take your foot off the throttle but the ONLY time I've noticed it downshifting funny was when I still had my foot, slightly, resting on the throttle pedal then it did some weird shit but that was the ONLY time its ever downshifted odd. Usually I don't even notice it downshifting on decal. Maybe I just lucked out and got a "good one". ;)
