I've been lurking in the dark here for quite some time, I've been pretty successful with the Search function but I finally caved in and registered.

    My Question:

Has anyone had any negative experiences with simple traffic accidents that resulted in more damage because of their after market parts?

Specifically im thinking about parts that are bolted/welded right to the frame, has anyone been in an accident where it would have been simply body work but in the end it tweaked something a lot more expensive?

This is my first tacoma (upgraded from an '83 Mercedes Turbo Diesel) and I love it! You guys have been a great resource, Keep it up!

    First welcome to tw

typically the armor means the other guy is toast, I get rear ended all the time and never have any issue with the plate bumper, although the other is being towed, more mass means the other guy takes the brunt of the engergy, to a point of course.

I figured as much, plate steel usually wins over sheet metal. Just didnt know if a direct transfer of energy to the frame had side effects.

    same shit as everyone else
If you hit hard enough to damage the frame imagine what would have happened if you didn't have the plate steel there. It would be just as bad in the end. Your only replacing plastic covers with steel. I wouldn't worry about it.

well, we tow and winch with a items heavy and such directly connected to our frames, granted not the same kinetic force but yanking mass around, id rather have mass in front and back of me for the ding dong to hit and over come that mass.

Good questions. It's definitely possible to damage significant parts in an accident with all our parts that will transfer the force directly to the frame. But like it has been said, sheet metal gives in a lot easier!
