I'm considering getting a shell for my truck, and came across one on craigslist today. I have a couple questions for you guys that have shells.

First question does this shell look like the right one for my truck (09 DCLB) I'm asking because in the pictures it looks like the guy has removed the bedrail caps in order to install the shell, is this normal? or is the shell supposed to sit ontop of the bedrail caps?

I've looked through a bunch of member photos on here and can't quite tell if the their shells are sitting ontop of the rail caps or if they were taken off.

Also does anyone know if you can replace the non sliding rear window to one that slides open for incab access from the bed.

    All your help is appreciated!

thats not the right cap. That is for 1st gens. He had to remove the bed rails because it is too narrow for the bed.

I'm sure functionally it will work fine, but because its for a different truck it will look funny and probably leak

Looks like its for a 1st gen Tacoma. I just bought a used Leer and it sits on top of the plastic bed rails. It has about an inch skirt on the sides to keep the water out, which is why you can't see the plastic bed rails when you look at other members trucks. I would pass if I were you!

I have that model shell, and no, that is not fitting correctly. You do not have to remove the caps.. it will sit perfectly over them.

Do not buy a cap that says it fits all these various brands of trucks. You need one made for our bed. Also, note that a shell for the regular cab will not work on an access cab or double cab (the cab has a different shape).

    Hope it helps!

Thanks guys. I knew something didn't look quite right with it.

I knew it was too good to be true, being the correct color and bed length :)

    I'll keep on looking.

Here's how it should look like. Same year and model you have.
It's for sale too. Too bad you're so far away.

This may be a stupid question- I am a TACO FNG... Would a shell for an access cab long bed fit right on a double cab long bed?

Technically, they should be sitting on top of bed rail caps. Otherwise the bed could be scratched and the cap could slide around.
