Before buying any used vehicle, I go over commonly damaged areas with a magnet looking for body filler.
A thin layer of filler will still pull, but there's a difference in feel.

But I would have missed yours... never would have thought to check the roof.

I would suspect either hail damage, or if it lived in Florida, perhaps a coconut.

 WOW.. that really sucks. If it was newer and purchased from Toyota I'd say take it back to them and ask about body warranty, but given the fact it was used and previously wrecked in some regard and the fact that it doesn't appear to be metal anymore.. well I think body shop is the place to go for sure.

    My AC has the ribs.

OP, pull your headliner. It it should be relatively easy to see if there's any collision damage from underneath.

I think that the roof is made out of some sort of fiberglass, it's not metal. It's flexible, I know because I sat on my roof a few weeks ago. Caused a few light rounded, none pitted dents I had to get repaired. But yours looks like it was repaired at some point.

I also noticed that there is no ribbed, raised parts on your roof like there are on mine. It could be a repair that wasn't done properly.

    Yup.

Fiberglass wouldn't dent when you sit on it... it just breaks.

Im still shocked at these pictures and a crack like that. I would love to know what happened in this situation for the repair on the roof. That just boggles my mind!!!

In the first pic it looks like a sheet of fiberglass or some old boat parts. You see the material is about an eighth of an inch thick and yellowish
No ribs...something is up and it looks like backer board for a dresser.

    Let us know Anna Jo...

Pretty easy to tell that's not even a factory paint job, too. Looks like some clear coat I've sprayed and had to buff out in the past.

Sorry you got taken, OP. I don't know where people even find the nerve to do that shit to others.

My bet would be hail damage. It is just sad that the repair was done at a substandard body shop.

This is great advice. I go to the extreme and I do two things. I hire a body shop guy ($50) and take him to the vehicle for inspection. If that passes, then I take it to the dealer, and have them do a PDI (pre-destination inspection) and they check everything including a compression test on the motor. Last time it cost me like $175. If the PDI comes back clean then I buy it. :) Maybe it's overkill but it makes me sleep well at night. :D

Sorry to the OP, but I agree with everyone else here, that roof has been damaged and the repair has gone bad.

idk if any one posted. but from the pic it looks like the whole room has been bonded! i don’t see the “ribs”/ridges that the 2nd gen trucks have. the whole roof looks smooth.

New Navigation DVD/CD/TV/AV/Bluetooth Stereo and seat mod spacers, 1" hubcentric spacers, seat heaters....
something had to fall on the roof, caving it in, they probably pulled the headliner, popped it out as best they could, reinstalled headliner then bondo'd or glassed, then painted...

bet when you pull the headliner you will see bad things above...

with that kind of crack in the roof, one would expect water to be entering the truck bigtime, didn't hear her say it was wet inside...

A good bodyshop can section a new roof on, expensive though...bummer:(

 Clearly bondo cracking. And sadly the stain on the left edge shows the steel is rusting underneath the bondo. This makes repair that much harder. This will have to be cut off and a new panel welded on.

OP is SHE NOT A HE. lol

a pic of the whole roof would help as well. if it’s smooth/flat it has had bad damage and the whole roof is bondoed, it should have like 4 ridges across it.
