I have a 2012 tacoma. Last night i noticed that my head and brake lights would work even though the key was out. I've never noticed the lights working when the key is out of the ignition. I know in some cars the headlights will turn on but not the brake lights too. Is this normal for these trucks? Does anyone else's lights work when the key is turned off?

Must be 2012 maybe. Mine turn off when I pull the ignition key. Even when I leave them on.

I have never seen a vehicle that the running/headlights will not turn on when the key is out. I have an '02 and the headlights turn themselves off when I turn the ignition off but if I turn the headlight switch off and back on the lights will come on even with the key out

Drivers Door closed, headlights on, turn engine off, take key out - Headlights stay on until the Drivers door is opened.

Drivers Door open, headlights on, turn engine off, take key out - Headlights turn off immediately.

I have run into a time or two under different scenarios that I had to turn the headlights off manually, like if I turned the headlights on when the engine was off but the key was still on. When the key was taken out the lights stayed on.

Perhaps the OP should clarify something. He didn't say they stayed on. He said "they work", which I took to mean that he can turn the headlights on and off without the key in the ignition, and when he presses the brake pedal, the brake lights will come on. This is normal of course, as pretty much every vehicle out there will have their brake lights come on when pressed, even if the key is out of the ignition, as well as the headlight switch will still turn on the headlights.

Yes Bamaboy i meant the head and brake light will turn on and off without the key, also the brake lights will light up without the key. I had an 06 tacoma for a few years and i've had my 12' for over a year and i've never noticed it until last night. What surprised me the most is that my brake lights will come on when the brake pedal is depressed.

    Yup.
    Perfectly normal.
Turn signals will shut off with the key, but the hazards (normally powered from the brake circuit) and brake light will operate any time.
Same for the parking lights and headlights.
