So i just bought my new Taco 2 weeks ago, and a last week i noticed some rattling from underneath the center area where the transmission is:confused:. It only rattles when im in neutral or if im in gear i have the clutch pedal depressed. So i took it to Toyota and there saying there might be an issue with the transfer case, so there waiting for there shop foreman to check it out and make the call on what to do. i only have 900 miles on it.

anyone else has had this issue or what other 2013 issues are floating about to just be aware of.

I had something similar and Toyota blew it off and just said they didn't know what it was. Did they say what could be wrong with the transfer case? Mine is a 2011 4x4 with the v6 and 6 spd.

With the clutch pressed or in neutral, the transfer case has no power applied.

Mine rattles too... it's an Auto.... ??? I'm thinking it's exhaust related?? Maybe a shield hitting the exhaust?? Maybe it's up front... and a pully??

i have a dcsb 6 speed and have the same noise, i hear it over large bumps. I havent taken it back yet as im trying to get the driveline vibration fixed first (i cant a week without my truck) it almost sounds like a loose suspension component. Please keep this updated.

How can it be the transfer case when your trans output shaft is not moving when in neutral or with the clutch depressed?

    I'd find another dealer.

I take my tacoma offroad quite a bit. I noticed after one trip having a rattling sound from the front of the truck if it was shaking just right. I found out the left side of the front skid plate bent back just enough to rattle against a nut. the metal skid plate is thin and reletively easy to bent. fixed my problem.

It was occasional. When ever things vibrated just right it would oscillate enough to rattle

I have this rattle also when I switched from my 02 TRD to my 2013 TRD OR 6 speed. I found something while waxing last weekend. It seems the rattle may be in the rear wheel wells were the plastic liner contacts the painted metal. My buffer caused the same rattle I hear on mine. I bumped around a little and found this plastic piece to be very loose, and when a light vibration occurs a loud rattle is the result.

I am going to try and put some kind of rubber bumpers on these pieces to see if it stops the rattle.

Mine does too. I blamed the steering, then found the tsb for the intermediate shaft bearing for 2013. Tsb describes a rattle at low speeds, and a replacement bearing.

My dealer couldnt reproduce it but I'll show them myself next time

    Maybe this is your problem?

Yesterday I noticed my rear passenger wheel well plastic was loose. One of the plastic rivets popped out. Mine is the plastic directly at the top of the wheel well. Makes quite a loud rattle. I'm gonna stop by lowes and buy some of their plastic rivets that they sell in the parts bins.

So today i picked up my taco from the dealer and spoke with the shop foreman. According the techs and him the noise isnt from the transfer case as they first thought. They told me that the noise originates from the play in the drive shaft, the rattle is normal and "the vehicle is operating as it was designed", he also told me that they drove another 13' V6 6speed and the same small rattle happens when your in neutral or have the clutch pedal pressed down. so if other 13' V6 6speeds OR have em then whatever, guess i have to live with it.
