I'm confused. My 98' Jetta TDI got 500-550 miles per tank. My mother's 04' Golf TDI gets almost 600 miles per tank. Mercedes is claiming to have two diesel sedans that get over 500 miles per tank. What about these vehicles?

The gas gauge should be full to 3/4 90-100miles 3/4 to 1/2 180-200miles 1/2to 1/4 290-300miles 1/4 to E 390-400miles then about 2 gallons left another 40miles. It doesn't work that way . It has nothing to do with the truck getting better milage at any point it is the way the gauge reads That is all. I have gone up to 19.94 average in my double cab and that was with around town and then up to the Lake Tahoe area which is 6,000 ft from Sacramento 0 ft. Air conditioning on the whole way. I am glad I did not buy the Sport Trac. This is without the new Leer cap I am getting and with stock airfilters and oil etc. I know it will not get worse...Rich

    80-100 to 3/4 tank
    160-180 to 1/2 tank
    230-240 to 1/4 tank
320-340 to empty (not counting 3 gallon reserve)

My low fuel light came on at about 300 miles this time.

My tank holds 21 gals, I think yours does too. I fill my tank and take the gals it take divided into the miles I drove. This time I had gone 241.3 miles and the needle was just over 3/8 or 37.5% I had been getting about 18.79 to 19 , so with the extra I had done in my driving 19.94 was a good sign to me. I know that generally the gauge correct or not in it's ratios of use are normally the same and when I get used to it I will know exactly what's up. I hope with the new cap and a few more miles even better as that has been the case with my last few trucks...

New 2007 Taco 4cyl/5spd manual. 1st tankful got 20mpg, ran A/C all the time. I'm taking a 1500 mile trip in October to VA/NC from FL, it'll be interesting to see what I get. I'm going to put in an Afe air filter after I take out the charcoal filter, seen in another post. Hoping for better'n 25mpg. Got 15mpg in my '92 4WD Toy 4cyl/5spd manual.

I'll use the non-oiled so I don't run a risk of fowling my sensors.

Yeah - I have the oiled. maverick491 pointed out that AFE does make a dry filter for the 2.7L. If I had known that at the time (or could have found it for order), I would have gotten that. Oiled filters run the risk of fowling your MAF sensor. While it is probably only a $50 part, until you know its bad, you will get horrible MPG and lose power.

Sixgunsam, let us know how that works for you. :) BTW - I can't wait to see pics of your truck! (hint, hint)

2007 Taco 4cyl/5spd manual. 1st tankful got 20mpg, ran A/C all the time. I took a 1500 mile trip in October 2007 to VA/NC from FL and got average 25.4mpg on trip. Staying constant at 20.5 around town for now. I haven't done anything yet to the air filter, so I'm anxious to find out how that affects my mileage.
