Don't install tires larger than stock. Don't carry excess gear that makes your engine work harder. Learn to use the gearing to your advantage. IMHO, that's all you need. I wouldn't spend a dime on fancy intake or exhaust components. Driven and maintained properly, it will keep going for decades.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Supercharge that thing! The URD charger puts it right up there with the V6 in horsepower I guess.

^For $4700 plus installation labor, it's cheaper to trade the truck for a V6, unless you must have a regular cab (for more compact trail rig, etc.)

    You've got what you've got.
More power (significant) is only going to come from a supercharger.

Your proposed engine swap will be as costly as trading the truck in on a V6, and leave you with a truck with no warranty and no resale value.

    Engine. Trans. Electronics. Exhaust.

And do it all in a way that isn't going to cause the emissions system to throw a fit.

And even then, it won't pass smog.

Kinda what Rich said. You have what you have. Leave it alone and enjoy the truck (especially the mileage). When money allows go for the V6 option sitting on the dealer lot. Until then know that you still have a great little truck that should be dependable and do most everything you would want. Hell... when fuel prices rise again I may wish I had your truck lol.

To be honest there is really nothing you can really do to a 4 banger to get any more power. I mean if you had one that you could change the cam shaft or put in some different rods and cylinders or bore it out then yes you could get more power. But if you are going to go for a motor swap why waste your time with a V6? Go for a V8.

The air filters and exhaust crap and whatever else they say you can bolt on to get more power is real crap. That stuff only really works on V8's not 4 bangers.

The only way to get more power is to force more air in the cylinders and that would be with a turbo or super charger.
