How badly do I need 4x4?
Gas mileage difference between 4x4 and 2x4?
Maintenance and repair $ difference between 4x4 and 2x4?
    2007 and later, right?
    Auto vs Manual?
    4 vs 6 cyl?
    Access Cab vs Double Cab?
    Short bed vs long bed?
What to look for when buying a used Tacoma?
Sticker shock at dealer for new Tacomas. And used. Am I buying a house? Damn!
Feel comfortable in the less than $18,000 range re: what can we afford.

OK, actively searching for used Tacoma. HELPING buy for son as graduation gift. The day has come. I work with people for a living, not mechanical things, so out of my league when it comes to used cars. Any help advice appreciated.

If there was one bit of advice I would give on this it's: don't delay too long once you've found one you want. These things don't stay on the market for very long at all. I was looking for one 2-3 years old, but as soon as something I wanted to check out hit the market, it was gone within one or two days. I ended up buying new just because I got tired of constantly missing them.

They are at a premium everywhere. I bought new once I saw two years and 60K miles only brought the price down by about $2000.

Last fall I sold my 05 TRD double cab 4x4 with 135k on it for 12 grand. And it was a bit of a tough sale. There were several similar trucks in the same ballpark mileage/year/and price wise. Now I'm poking around for another one and I can't find anything halfway decent for under 15 grand. Should have just kept it!

If this is a longevity purchase (Meaning he is going to keep it for a loooong time) then look at his expected lifestyle over the next 8-10 years. Does he show an interest in off-roading? Is he going into the military? Is he going to college? What are his expected expenses and how does insurance look for him? (Does he have tickets or accidents that can cause high rates)

There are a TON of factors that can go into a purchase like this that only you two can answer. I always go by the belief of "Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it!"

Agreed! When I found one online I was interested in I'd call just to be told that it had just sold. And listed that day. I finally found one using this site http://www.autotrader.com/

Once I found it I signed up for a test drive via email since the place was closed, was Sat night, but did go and look at it Sun night. Once they opened on Monday they called to confirm test drive. I showed up early and lucky I did since soon after another guy showed up to buy it outright without looking at it, since I was there 1st I had 1st dibs. So test drove it and put $500 down until I had all the cash to pay it off, about 2 weeks. I've owned it since Jan and very happy with my purchase. No problems with her, 2nd owner with 46k when I got it.
And of course after being a member here it no longer looks like it did when I got it. :D For some dumb reason I have a mods list a mile long I'm chipping away at. Thanks Tacomaworld! At least I do get a lot of comps on the truck now. ;)

    Good luck in your search!

I decided to go new instead of used, because yeah, the price diff between used/new just wasn't all that much and I'd rather have something with 10 miles on the odometer.

For comparison, I only paid $27,462 base for the 2012 4wd, AC, SR5 right from the dealer GO Toyota. Mine had the factory tow package, DRL's, floor mats.

If you're on a budget, go for the used. Plenty of people have got good used ones. I've sold two of my used Toyota trucks and those two people that bought them got good trucks.

Naturally, if you're buying used it takes a lot more legwork to find the right one.

That Costco deal isn't that great. That out the door price they quoted you is close to my out the door price, and mine also has the TRD Off-Road and Towing Packages on it. Those are a few thousand extra on top of what just access cab and SR5 4x4 is, so I'd keep looking.

I agree 100% that there are a myriad of considerations for a purchase like this. I also agree 100% that these vehicles hold their value well, so finding a used one in good shape that is significantly lower in price than new is difficult. But I finally did it-- and it was because (as mentioned above) I found one and jumped on it right away, after having several disappear on me because someone else acted faster.

My only original contribution to this thread is: read the article in each of the annual Consumer Reports buying guides about shopping for used cars. They have a lot of practical information in them. But take it with a grain of salt, because some of their advice seems off-the-mark. Example: I have a Mazda Miata, and love it. But it's a sports car, so it doesn't ride as quietly or as comfortably as a family sedan. And Consumer Reports criticized the Miata (at least when it first came out) for having a "loud, uncomfortable ride".

I noticed that the dealer where I traded mine has it back in inventory. Not sure what happened but about 3 weeks after I traded it was gone. New price is $21,988. 2009 DCSB, Prerunner TRD OR with just shy of 88,000. Price is not much less than I paid new.
