I would be very careful about going to a much larger tire, only because you have an automatic ,and a DC. I have a 4 cyl. 5 speed, and am currently running 275-70-17's BFG AT's on it. I am surprised at how the truck handles that size tire, I can feel some power loss, mostly in the higher gears, but nowhere near what I would have thought. It still smokes right up the local hills, but a downshift to 4th. to keep the rpm's up might be needed. No big deal. I would like to put 285's on it, but it would definentley need a re-gear to do it,maybe to something in the 4:88 range from my stock 4:10's. I am sure some of the guy's running automatics will voice their opinion, which would be a much better comparison than my 5 speed info. , but thought this might be of some help.

Very hard to believe that he has no issues. At a minimum he has substantial power loss without a regear. That is unless his truck has stock 4.56 or better. Which isn't likely with a 5 speed. My 1st gen was stock with 3.58 gears, was slow when I put 31s on it, and with 33s 5th gear was useless. I regeared to 4.56 and I van use 5th gear again and regained a fair amount of the stock power.

I've never driven my 4 banger with stock tires but my truck came with 285/75/16 bfg at and it was very sluggish up any hills. Driving around town it was pretty good. I downsized to 265/75/16 cooper atp and the power on the hills is much better.

I would not recommend BFg at in any size on a 4 banger as there are lighter options out there for any given tire size most likely

I'm running 285/75/16 on stock gears. And in my personal opinion it's a dog. Going to the mountains I feel like my engine is screaming just to maintain speed. Gears are list of things to do next. But to my knowledge TX is not very mountainous. You might be alright.

Texas is flat as hell.. and I road bike so I know where the hills are on asphalt.. The only off roading I will be doing is dirt roads, slight incline to camp and fish. I am thinking an inch to an inch and a half in height isnt going to kill me...
