It recommends 10 miles a month. Should I engage for all 10 miles the first time. Or should I go like 5 and 5 tomorrow?

Look Larry , I don't wanna do this again , I know you are a homophobe and because of your religious convictions need to believe that sexual preference is a choice and not genetically programmed , I would rather live in reality , thanks

:woot: :locked: here we go again

And also I engage my 4x4 in pavement all the time and do hard turns. Then when I get bored I turn on my locker and really go to town on it...

Take it off road, you bought 4x4 for what reason?

Do it while parallel parking on asphalt.

many say OH NO! NO 4WD ON PAVEMENT! then go wheel in granite. I try not to turn on pavement, or granite while in 4x4, but you know what, I have and it still works. it doesn't feel good, but it works.

if we all own trucks that will destroy themselves before dragging a tire, we bought really crappy trucks

Just engage it when you get a chance on a straight stretch , don't get too worried about the 10 mile thing , just give it some exercise

    Sorry your thread got sideways

On my winter set of tires I had to come out of 4wd at times. They were binding turning into parking stalls and side streets in Washington IN THE SNOW. That was a nasty pop when they finally unwound. I think straight line driving with caution would dofine, as others said. Find some gravel road n explore , more fun

"honey, I'm going to do some truck maintenance!!!"

I dont understand these threads. I drive in 4WD exclusively all winter long, asphalt, rain, black ice, gravel roads, winding and straight alike. I don't believe toyota intended for 4wd to only go in a straight line. Used it this weekend on some backroads to have the traction I needed for high speeds. That was nothing but winding gravel. If you turn the wheel and feel it bond a bit, brake, and straighten out til it doesnt bind. You lose some turning radius, but I dont think you can destroy a transfer case from normal driving in 4wd.

I have 35,000 miles on my truck....no explosions to report. In fact when I changed the fluid in the transfer case, there was hardly any shavings at all. I can guarantee I have turned on dry asphalt countless times.

Granted, I can't turn SHARP in 4wd, but to say you can't turn....thats just nonsense. Or maybe I have some mythical differential that's impervious to 'dry turning'

Shavings aren't a measure, something more catastrophic.

After 30000 miles, you cam expect some shavings, and I'm talking very fine particles. Nothing substantial at all

great answers to a thread with a topic of "WTF?"

OP, You dont need to use 4 wheel drive often at all. The front end components spin all the time, so engaging it is kinda moot.

Oops, I see I typed are, when I meant "aren't". You won't create more shavings by turning in 4wd.
