4WD on the asphalt???

Forgive me if this is a stupid question. I have a 2013 4x4. I need to engage the 4WD for lubrication purposes. Not doing any real 4 wheeling for a month or so. Does it matter if I drive in 4 wheel on the asphalt or would it be better to take it off road? How low should I keep the speed? I know the manual says under 60 but wondering about the first few times I engage it.

Do not engage it on pavement at all if you have to just go to a field and put it in 4x4 and drive it around for a few minutes

 

find a dirt or country gravel road and drive it for a bit there.

 

Why does it matter if it's pavement or dirt?

 

I engage mine on the pavement ONLY under the following 2 conditions:

1) It's a straight, flat road.
b) It's raining.

Not worth binding up the driveline and exploding the transfer case. You could always put the truck on jackstands and 4x4 in the air...

 

Should have got 2wd if you don't need it.

All wheels need to be able to spin independently, which curvy asphalt won't allow.

 

I've driven my last 2 Tacomas ~10 miles in 4WD every month for the last 7 years. I just engage it on a long straight road in the rain. I turn it off when I need to corner. No problems in 7 years, that should tell you something...

 

It is best to always engage it on dirt, but if you are going in a straight line and no locker is engaged for a short distance there should be no damage. Even though the book says it is safe to engage up to 60 I would stop and engage it or at least be going very slow.

You won't blow a transfer case, you work break down. Keep it slow and straight as possible. I've done a few tests on pavement for feel and testing new parts. I do not believe you will have any issues with the ( what 4 miles) recommended lube trip.
