    I am running 265 70 17's Toyo Open Country ATII's and have lost about 2mpg. I am not complaining, but just more so curious what gears I should go with if I decide to go that route. I will be lifting it to 3" w new UCA's and 285's at some point in time.

    All opinions and info would be greatly appreciated as to my setup now with new gears and the benefits as well as my future 3" setup.

    Also, what gears are stock on my 2010 Sport DCSB?

    Thanks

    Your truck should come with 3:73 gear ratio, I believe they only sell 4:56 aftermarket. As for doing it yourself it depends but it isn't something many people do on their own because if it isn't properly installed you can have lots of issues which can cost more $$$

    Call up East Coast Gear Supply. Great prices and good customer service. They'll get you straightened out. Although I'm not sure a rehear is going to make that much of a difference for you in MPG. Especially if you do a lot of highway miles.

    Wow wouldn't have thought the gears jumped that high from a 3:73 to a 4:56. Yeah I was debated on doing it myself or professionally but if I can find some good detailed instructions I feel like I could do it as long as its just normal tools I can buy and nothing major I have to do.

    If you buy complete 3rds from a vendor like East Coast Gear Supply, a competent wrench can swap them out in a day. Otherwise, you're looking at getting some specialized equipment and facing the learning curve of setting up the preload and backlash of a set of gears. A worthwhile endeavor if you are really into wrenching but not so much for the bolt-on type modder.

    In your MPG calculations, are you accounting for the change in circumference of the tire? Bigger tire means you travel farther for the same number of rotations.

    One other option would be to pull 3rds from a manual version of your truck. Not sure on 2nd Gens, might be geared for 4.10 (which the 1st Gens are) which would be closer to what you want.

    My MPG difference from stock to new tires is only 1.03, so maybe 9-12 miles more per fill up. Still an AVG 2 MPG drop from what I was getting even when I try to drive conservative. I guess the weight of the wheels and tires has something to do with it too. So probably not worth changing out gears unless I jump to a 285 tire.

    Thanks and I just checked the weight of my new wheels/tire combo v my old wheels/tire combo and its exactly the same?? Why is my MPG off so much. I was getting 330 a tank now lucky to get 280

    New wheels 23lbs old 28lbs. Old tires 36lbs New tires 40.8 lbs
    Old = 256lbs total
    New= 255.2lbs total

    Not worth the effort or expense to go from 3.73 to 4.10 ratios. If / when you go to the 285 tires you will really need to regear and then go to 4.56. You did good buying those lightweight wheels! I am running 265/75R16 duratracs and stock 3.73 gears. Truck is a 5-speed auto trans. I get 16.8mpg highway/city combined, doubt there is much I can do to improve this except drive more like an old lady (already have it dialed back...)

    You need to account for the larger diameter of your new tires in the equation, as previously stated.

    Your odometer now has an X% of inaccuracy which is directly related to the percentage in diameter you increased.

    Simply put, a mile registered is not a mile traveled according to you stock odo. Same goes for your mph, from the factory, they read ~3% slow, mph registered should now be correct.

    All off the above is moot if you're using GPS measurements

    Interesting enough, a 265/75/16 or 265/70/17 is ~3% larger than stock...this puts your mph dead on correct and your odo about 3% short of actual miles traveled using stock instrumentation

    To add...if you spend the bulk of your time on the highway, you might actually see an increase in mileage as you've effectively made your gear set 'taller'...that is if you can adjust your math to be correct.

    Edit to add: both my above posts assume stock gearing

    Your ratio is actually going the wrong way. Going from 3.73 to 4.10 will reduce your mileage. If you are looking to increase you would want to go to 3.55, but this will cost you on low end torque, especially on the trail at low speeds.
