i'm proof the stock 1st gen lockers can handle big tires and plenty of abuse just fine.
2nd gens use i believe i was told smaller gears inside the locker - they've been known to fail on the trail.
i can't remember exactly what but something made them weaker than the 1st gen elockers.

That "failure on the trail" and "smaller than first gen" is what steers me away from spending the extra money. I'm going to pull the trigger on one or the other because I think thats a good ass deal. Even though I'm still going to try to get whatever else i can out of the deal

the 96+ 4-runners use the toyota 8'' diff and the 05+ tacos use the toyota 8.4'' diff.
yep, most of the trucks that have the problems are dedicated trail rigs that get wheeled very hard.

Bw s256 turbo with 3 in glass pack dumped pre axle raptor liner bed and top rails and fenderflares and rocker panels. Hunter side steps. Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
Obviously $1000 to arb locker on the Sr5 would save u a grand, but with the trd u get seats upgraded and suspension aNd an outlet in the bed which all that would be worth a grand to me and bfg's to boot.

Get the TRD I have used the atrac a few times and it is worth it plus you save yourself the hassle of buying a great locker to begin with on the trd

A-TRAC works the front tires (and the back tires)... Rear Locker, only works the rear, and 'only for emergency' (per Toyota). A-TRAC can be used anytime you are in low range, and it is amazing... never need the locker, but I like to have it and have used it with A-TRAC when pulling other stuck Tacomas and Rangers up hills. This is my third Off Road TRD 4WD... and I know the value of a locker, as I used the locker in my other two Tacomas a LOT. The A-TRAC give MORE traction and less worry when off roading.

I wish Canada could get the DC TRD OR :(

My dad's FJ has the elocker (not sure if the same as Tacoma) and he wheels in it lightly and has never had a problem at all. I've beaten the hell out of that thing and it's still holding up....damn I want that FJ

The 2013 Tacoma brochure says all models have A-TRAC as standard equipment, along with auto LSD - no pkg or option required. The only extra traction with TRD OR is the elocker.

Really? Hmmm well I gotta do some research then.

Could be a typo in the brochure or maybe like the auto LSD, it's always on and the OR pkg gives you an override button.

Look at David K's 09+ Nine Driving Modes thread, the link for which you can get from any of his posts. It says the modes 1-6 are available for all 4WDs and the 6th mode turns the A-TRAC off, so all 4WDs must have an A-TRAC button somewhere.
