I attacked this project today, my truck has 124,000 miles on it and when I checked my pulleys they all wobbled and I was getting some weird noises under the hood. The three idler pulleys are easy. The Tensioner pulley sucks the big one. It took me 4 hours to get the tensioner out and in. Very tight space to work in. It was worth it in the end. The engine runs a lot quieter.

I used post #3 in this tutorial to help me:
    http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/foru...154-idler-pulley-bearing-failure-what-do.html

You definitely need to remove the fan and shroud to get the tensioner out, no need to remove the battery. Just disconnect the negative terminal before yanking the alternator. If you're just replacing the idler pulleys you can go in from underneath, remove the front skid guard, loosen the serp belt and just unbolt the pulleys, probably take 15-20 minutes for just those.

    This is what I replaced:

Parts (Ordered all Gates products from RockAuto):
    (x2) Upper Pulleys (#2): 36173
    (x1) Lower Pulley (#1): 36174
    (x1) Tensioner w/Pulley: 38411
    Serpentine Belt: K070834

Got everything for $194 shipped with a coupon code from retailmenot.

Just did this the other weekend to my truck, replaced the 3 idlers and the pulley on the tensioner. I also used Gates pulleys and a Gates belt from Rock Auto. I purchased the entire tensioner assembly but only ended up replacing the pulley. Replacing the whole arm looks to be a PITA. I pulled the new pulley off the new assembly and just swapped the pulleys. It's not overly hard and saves a LOT of time (no need to remove anything). Just remember, the pulley on the tensioner is reverse threaded!

The 36174 pulley will replace the idler pulley. One uses a spacer and one does not (I can't remember which is which).

No need to buy the whole arm unless it has malfunctioned beyond just the pulley...

    Resurrecting this thread:

Has anyone replaced the entire tensioner? The three bolts on the front look straight forward, but is the hidden bolt behind it a pita? I cant find the procedure for this. Is it that straight forward? The linked thread is for the V6. I'm working on the I4, 2.7.

I have a picture of all the torque values and part numbers in my TW album.

    1) Loosen pressure on belt with 3/8" ratchet and insert screwdriver/awl into center of tension arm to release pressure.

    2) Remove belt

    3) change pulleys

    4) have fun reinstalling belt correctly (hardest part for me) :D

    5) wave at the people changing the tension arms when it's not needed

I drew a diagram before I removed the belt so I wouldn't f-up the install. It's absolutely ridiculous that Toyota didn't put the belt diagram under the hood

Because its a shit load of work taking 3-4hrs when all that's typically needed is a 5 min pulley swap. Also cost 10x more.
