I have a 2009 4x4 4 banger single cab and I bought it used. Only 27k on it when I got it. Stock rims and tires yet the speedo is off by 5 mph doing 50. Anyone know what it could be

I've seen a lot of guys on here say that their speedos are off. It almost seems like Toyota uses the same speedo setup for all the models even though they have different tire sizes.

I know mine was correct until I put bigger tires on. Now it reads slower.

So basically I should just put bigger tires on

This is common with stock setups. Do some searching and you'll find lots of info.
The short answer is that Toyota deliberately created this 5% speedo error, assuming many customers would mount larger wheels and tires, which is correct. The odometer is correct so don't worry about it racking more miles than you are actually driving.

My 2012 is off my a few mph. I think it's supposed to be that way. It always indicates a few mph faster than what I'm going. Odometer is dead on. So it's made that way I guess, many companies do this.

2013 TRD sport 4x4. My speed is about 1 mph off around 60-70 then gets more off the faster I go. If my Speedo shows 70 I'm really going 69, but my odometer is dead on. Seems stupid...my 2006 4runner's Speedo is perfect.

I think the allowable limit is 10%. So 5 MPH difference at 50 MPH is acceptable by federal standards.

You are fine and within the law.

That would be between him and the police.... Not my call. Most vehicles on the road today have a variance in the speedometer reading. That is why Most cops don't pull people for 5 mph over.

    They could, but most don't.

Good...I'm not crazy. We have tons of those "portable radars" all over the roads here in KY and they all indicate I'm going ~4 MPH slower than the speedo indicates. Stock setup.

No wonder grandpa q-tip is honking and flashing his lights at me on the backroads.

If you don't draw blood, you're doing it wrong!
Good god, I'm glad you were referring to your SPEEDOMETER.

My 2010 came with P245/75/16 Dunflops. My speedo was off 2 mph slow. Put on LT265/75/16 BFG's and now it is dead on. Off course odometer is off now.

both speedometer and odometer error will change over time due to tire wear. My 245/75-16 dunlops lost .5 inch in diameter from new to when I replaced them. Odometer error with new Mich LTX MS2's brand new was about 2.3% high. Speedometer was about 3 mph high at 60 mph.

My 2007 dash speedometer is 2mph off (slow) - according to my GPS. Stock tire size.

I have a Scangauge which is hooked up directly to the OBD port and directly to the ECM. The MPH reading on the Scangauge matches the GPS. So ....my truck is going the proper speed.... my visual dash reading (calibration) does not match the actual.

I never bothered to do anything with it. I just aim the dash speedo about 2mph faster or look at my Scangauge for an actual reading.

Mine is 4 to 5 miles off also, on both trucks.

It sucks as you are putting more miles on it, killing your warranty faster.

Not true. Miles travelled are always dead on.

the speedo "inaccuracy" to read slow, is not a failure of anything. the truck knows exactly how fast its moving. the speedo read out is engineered to be that way. and its very annoying. google it, many many vehicles have this "feature".

Odometer error will change over time. OBD gets data from the speed sensor, and it does not adjust for tire wear. My Scangauge showed more error when new tires were installed, although different brand, per TireRack were the same diameter and revs per mile as the oem Dunlops. At 10,000 miles dunlops dash odometer was .1% off when I added the ScanGauge. When Michelin LTX MS2 went on at 35,000, error became 2.3%. Adjusted ScanGauge to zero error for odometer. I expect that to change over time as the tires wear. This is also what happens if you change to a different size tire as the speed sensor only knows revolutions per mile, not how much distance is covered by the tire since it doesn't know the diameter of the tire, which will become less as the tire wears. Dunlops went from 12/32 tread to 4/32 from new to when replaced, so distance traveled is less on a worn tire (smaller diameter than when new).
