Went to start my 2012 this morning and...click...nothing, no lights besides battery and oil indicators, clock set back to 1:00. Jumped it with portable jump box and all is good. Get to work and notice alarm wont lock or unock and truck wont start again. Check cells - dry. It took 50 fl oz of water to fill it up but still nothing...i do not leave truck running on battery power listening to the radio or anything. Im hoping it is a bad battery and not some electrical issue. On hold with toyota to see if they will replace the battery at 37k miles

Edit: drove 30 miles to work and still didnt charge it enough to restart truck.

If battery was empty then sounds like crack in battery or it is overcharging.

Get it started and check terminals with volt meter. If it is 15-16 or higher then it is overcharging and boiling off the water.

Based on what you said it sounds like the battery was not filled properly from factory or you have an over aggressive charging system. None the less I will be checking mine for proper fill and charge rate.

It is on charge now, charger indicator needle said battery was dead as can be..ill test it at lunch and will most likely be getting a new battery. Im guessing if it was the charging system over charging it, the battery would have dried out a little quicker than 1.5 years...

I charged battery for 2.5 hours and it wouldnt start truck. Charge meter still said 0% charged...jumped truck and tested volts and it was right on 14V so no charging system issues, just a bad battery....not cool toyota, not cool

i'd hit the battery with a charger set on "START" for 5-10 minutes..then switch it to trickle.

the problem is that that battery is so dead, the charger doesnt "see" a battery connected to it and it wont charge.

worth a shot. saved many batteries with this trick.

so after a new battery, the radio does not come on, no sound or bluetooth either. everything else works, radio power button is unresponsive.

On a battery that is not maintenance free ( sealed ) you should check the battery level more often than 1.5 years.... It is part of regular maintenance. Letting it go dry is what killed it.

I check mine every oil change... Oh yeah, you should only use distilled water in the battery.

I know about the distiller water only but I thought Toyota would have been keeping up with checking that when I would bring it in...I guess I gave them too much credit

The portion of the plates not covered with electrolyte plates will sulfate and when refilled, will not take a charge. It is my understanding that checking the electrolyte levels and adding distilled water is not part of the normal preventive maintenance at the dealer. I do not know why, but I suspect that is has to do with selling replacement batteries. Water consumption is higher in hotter climates, so the best approach is to replace your OEM battery with the same type so it matches the OEM charging system. If the battery is a "Maintenance Free" type, be sure that you use one that has filler caps so you can replace the lost water.

For more information on sulfation, check out Section 16 in the Car and Battery FAQ on www.batteryfaq.org and Section 7 for tips on buying a replacement battery.
