Just plug it into the lighter and turn the key to ACC with the radio and the lights off.

The inverter has a fair amount of parasitic loss, and charging the phone, you'd be taking 12vdc, jacking it to 120vac, then dumping it back down to 5-12vdc.

Rich knows what he knows, and he knows it.

You might want to set a watch alarm to remind you to turn the truck back to OFF. It should take quite awhile to charge your phone long enough to cause a problem, but play it safe.

My phone charges in about an hour on the inverter. Not long enough to drain the battery. It takes much longer than that charging on the cigarette lighter because the lighter charger puts out less. My last camping trip I connected a power bar so everyone could charge their phones/kindles at once. It worked fine. I would start my truck every hour or so just in case though. Although I do have a brand new battery too (2k miles on 2013) In my old truck I have nearly killed the battery charging stuff though. I do believe the truck will cut the inverter power off when the battery gets too low though.

On a side note, I can get a week or more of battery life out of my phone when I backpack.
