My 09, 2.7, 5 speed, sounds like a diesel when rolling to a stop in neutral with the AC on. Only seems to do it with the AC on. It stops after a few brief seconds. I can hear it inside the cab, but can't duplicate outside with the hood propped up. I tried to record it to post, but the iPhone was picking up to many other noises.

I think this is normal, but would like feedback from Taco owners to see if they hear the same sound. If it is normal, anyone know what causes it?

    Thanks.

Nope, just like a diesel for a few seconds. I'll try to duplicate and post on here.

Air conditioning clutch compressor or bearing failure from the compressor most likely, this sound occurs because when you are at a stop the a/c usually cycles on and off.

Yep. Now get out there and replace that SOB.. If you are feeling cheap you can always nab up a used compressor but the chances of contamination in it are higher, due to it just sitting there in a junked taco. Your call.

That's exactly when it does it, seems to cycle on and off. So it's the AC clutch compressor. Is it common for it to go bad so soon? I mean it's an 09.

What happens if I just let it make noise till it fails? Anything catastrophic? Or just no AC?

It's gear rattle in the tranny because the engine is turning exactly the right speed to shake 'em. It'll go away when the clutch is pushed.

It really is weird. My truck does it too. Warm idle, 650 rpm, silent tranny. Sitting idle, AC on, 800 rpm, silent tranny. Rolling idle, 800 rpm, silent tranny. Rolling with AC, 900 rpm... rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle! Box of rocks!

How many miles you got on it? I knew it was the compressor.. it usually happens over time especially if you use the A/C a lot. It's an electromagnet that is bound to wear out with time due to the sucking in/ releasing motion the clutch performs throughout the RPM band. I wouldn't wait until it totally fails. If you do there is always the chance you can release all the metal puked up from the failed compressor through the system. Then in that case what would happen is instead of you paying maybe $500-$600 for a new compressor, you are paying well over $2000 for the entire replacement of the A/C HVAC system.

Wait hang on, are you a manual by the way??

Loose exhaust heat shields that's rattling on the exhaust when the harmonics are just right.

Are you a manual also by the way??

Just hit 68K miles. Yes, it's a manual. I will replace as soon as possible. Just pisses me off that a truck with only 68K and the compressor goes out. It's a toyo and expected a lot more use before costly repairs. My 89 toyo truck with almost 200k never had any issues...... crap.

If your a manual it might not be the compressor as said above

Might also be the throw out bearing
Do you coast to a stop with the truck in neutral and clutch engaged?

My 2.7 5 speed has always made some dieselish ticking. I've grown to just not pay attention to it. Goes away when I depress the clutch. It's extremely noticeable in drive thru's with the a/c on. Could be throw out bearing related. Like I said mine done it for the past 50k+ miles.

Yes mine is a manual. Just shy of 129k miles.

It's not the compressor; I can make it happen every time (engine warm, AC on, in neutral, >5 mph), and the noise can be started and stopped by pushing and releasing the clutch. It's usually a coasting-through-the-parking-lot phenomenon.

I've heard bad compressor clutches in the past. Not quite the same sound.
