My 2004 Grand Cherokee's recommended oil was 10W30, but that was also the last year they used those engines and it was designed in the 1950's! :)

Ya, 10w40 served my father quite well in the 60s and 70s.
Modern engines are different. Maintenance intervals are longer, and tolerances are tighter.

I hear ya on that Rich fer sure. Tell ya what, I'll give 5-30 a chance when I do my full changover in the next couple months. I've always ran 10-30 with no issues and the Yota Tech I know says 10-30 is fine, but I'm always up for trying something new. Specially since the 5-30 full synthetic is gonna be better (imo) than the regular. Thanks man.

I'm sold on Amsoil personally. I ran Mobil-1 from 5K-25K. At 25K I switched to Amsoil synthetic. At 30K I switched to Amsoil Super Synthetic and left the oil until 45K. I did change oil filter at 35K and 40K with Toyota filters. In a nutshell a 15K interval with a small boost of additional oil when changing filters.

I don't recommend anybody go for 15K on a single oil filter but I'd be curious to see the test results afterwards. I think I should also reduce air filter interval from 15K to 7.5K.

Sent the drain oil to Blackstone Labs for analysis. 1.8 TBN still. They suggested going another few thousand miles and re-testing. I didn't try the same test on a different brand, but no need. Kool aid was fully drank. I now have the full line of Amsoil products in my garage from gear oil to brake fluid to ATF to fuel stabilizer.

Just courious as to why you didn't use the amsoil filter rated for 15K. You would have saved some cash over the long haul with the average cost on oem filters. One thing I have noticed with Amsoil filters they are heavy compaired to oem. I know it has to do with construction and amount of filter media.

Those filters do have a heavy gauge housing to them and the over all construction and quality of materials is second to none. The filter media is a mesh reinforced high grade synthetic fiber that filters down to 20 microns, your not going to do better than that with out a bypass system but... the filter media area is quite small. I can't remember the actual square inch measurements (Chris 4x4 has a write up on it) but this filter has one of the smallest filtering media area in a oil filter especially when compared to those paper like filter media found in main stream products.
So while you get the most efficient and effective filtering with the ea filter one has to wonder how dirty/clogged it gets once you go that many miles considering how small the filter media is. Perhaps this is why many AMSOIL users go with the OEM filter, for fear of losing a good flow due to a clogged up media. I'm using the ea filter myself but I don't want to run it that long either , maybe I'll cut one open after 7,500 and see how it looks, then I can see for myself how it's holding up.

I forgot about the write-up in the technical section. I think all filters should have a pin that pops when the filter goes into bypass. The diff pressure indicator would be worth it.

If and I use the word if the filter does go into bypass you still get full flow. The insolubles would climb on the oil analasys. Post it up when you do this I would be very interested on your findings.

^^ This. I could not have said it nearly as eloquently, but what he said. After reading the Chris 4x4 write up and other threads, I felt better changing media every 5K. It would be interesting to compare the test results between the two different methods. Anybody doing the 15K with Amsoil 15K filter?

Here's the thing about Rotella... I used to use it in motorcycles. Why? Because it doesn't have "friction modifiers", which are the main reason you can't use car oil in a motorcycle- they kill the friction of your clutch, which shares oil with the engine.

Point being, I'm hesitant to use Rotella in a car, because wouldn't you want lower friction?

Since Toyota doesn't make filters, do you have the scoop on who the low bidder was for the current contract?

Denso is making the Oil filters for Toyota .
But after seeing that guy cut all of them open . I like the way the OEM filter is made .

Filter wise l personally use Toyora filters. But l think as long as you change the oil and the filter regularly with the right viscosity oil for your climate, your good.
