    Mod complete!
There is debate in this thread about the use of the Army Surplus rings and Toyota originals. I purchased from Army Surplus and these rings are quite stout; they look nice when installed. IMO, I can't see paying the extra money for the original; they're not that much different. I paid $11 for the 5 rings, to the door.
I painted my bolt heads and washer to match the rings and bed. Something that may be of use. To align the rings, at first I tried holding the ring while tightening. I later did this; I lined up the ring 1/4 turn to the left of the desired location. Once I snugged the bolt, I let go of the ring, as I tightened the bolt, the ring rotated into place.
To finish the mod, I loosened the rear 2 bolts and painted them as well.

This seems like a good method, giving the ability to "hide" the D-rings if needed. Just bought my bed mat and will soon add this mod.

Thanks to OP for taking time to explain install and benefits. Hopefully the concerns of using your existing bed bolts has settled down, as I know this is an old thread, but I'm a new Taco owner, so sucking up as many ideas as possible.

    Current Price for D-rings:

    http://www.trdparts4u.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=29603&cart=y

I noticed in OP pics that the D-ring came with rectangular backing plates, but they were removed from the install??? I understand you could not put them under the bed, but wouldn't it be an advantage to keep the backing plate at least on top to help spread the load on the plastic bed surface? Has anyone used these plates in this manner?

I finally got these installed. I used the army surplus rings and attached to my bed bolts. You have to do some modifications to the washers and bolts to get these to fit, I just drilled the holes out bigger. I also painted the bed bolts and washers black and cleared them so they look better and match the d-rings.

I added 2 Toyota rings and 2 Army Surplus rings. I think the Army Surplus rings might be a bit better - they are 'looser'. By this I mean the ring can be lifted or flipped easier. My Toyota rings are very difficult to flip over or turn.

Anyway, I have been very happy with the rings.

I prefer the rings to be harder to move so they don't rattle.

Ok I just took out my bolts and didn't realize that the D rings hole were not big enough to slide through the bed bolts. Do the Toyota D rings fit on the bed bolt without modification? Or is that necessary with either D rings? Thanks!

You need to open the holes in either with a 1/2" stepped drill bit (for metal). Here are some pics of them:

I think the Toyota bolts are not meant to go on the bed/frame bolts - they come with a different bolt and a backing reinforcement plate, for installation in different places in the bed.

I just used a dremmel and it didnt take that long. When i ordered these i accidently order 4 sets of 5 hahahhaha. i thought they were individually priced. i kept them anyways...because, well.... hey, you never know when your going to need a D ring :)

When i did the install i also pulled my bed rails off and slid 3 D rings behind the left bed rail and right bed rail and then screwed the rails back down. it came out pretty nice. you have to trim a hair on the top of the side compartments so that the one D Ring will fit. I didnt just put them behind the rail i slid them behind the flap of aluminum that is behind it as well. they turn out to be stronger than the plastic inserts that slide in the rails. I'll have to get a pic up. I also put one on the bolt that is next to the tailgate when its closed. now i have endless possibilities for tying down:)

    Edit: Here they are
