    Hello,

I have a 2005 Tacoma 4x4 SR5 4.0 V-6 & 6 Speed Manual. Mine is suffering the dreaded misfire cylinder 6 (136,000. miles). A friend has a 2011 Tacoma 4.0 V-6, will that bolt in my 2005? Anything I should know? Any DIY swaps that can help? Been wanting to do a new clutch as well.

    Thanks in advance!

    Damon

may have to change a few sensors or plugins, but should drop into place with no problems.

I wasn't Aware our engine had a problem with this. I read a few posts that went over the basics, ignition , fuel, air, etc. then suggestions of a burnt valve or a head gasket.
Changing out the engine sounds seriously like last resort stuff. Are you certain your engine is damaged? Have you done a compression test? I'd hate to hear you did it only to find it was a bad plug wire.
2011 engine probably has an updated ECU that you will want to swap too I imagine.

Dragons: Thanks for your reply. My engine has 136K miles and intermittently runs rough while throwing a code (misfire cylinder 6). I have tried new plugs, swapped injectors, swapped coil pack, and no difference. In my online research it appears that Toyota had a bad head gaskets from 05 to 07, coolant leaks between cylinders 4 & 6. My coolant is disappearing.. Clutch is original which I planned to change this year and can pick up a 2011 engine with 45K miles for much less than I can change my head gaskets.... That's my scenario, just exploring options.

Read this and I started thinking. What about a v8 swap, the 2006 tundra
Motor seems like it would fit,

in my opinion if my motor blew I would upgrade to a v8 tacoma project.
At least I will plan on it later on when my motor blows haha

Jake72, what is my old motor worth with bad head gaskets? Other than that it runs great, no smoke, no oil use, and quiet. Thanks

Toyota called back and said no go on swap. They said that since my friends truck was an auto and mine is a manual trans that the engine will need reprogramming and most of the wires will not plug in... I am still going to try as he was not certain and its to good a deal to pass up. If I am able to get the ECM from the auto truck and swap will that help?

OP said he could get the motor pretty cheap and with only 45k miles- that says to me the friend's truck is totaled and parting out.

I think I would be leaning towards a possible V8 swap if it were me.

if it only needs a head gasket and you replace it maybe 4-500 or a little more. is your friends truck totaled so you could just swap the plugs and a few other things.

dont trust dealer call salvage yard and ask them about an interchange for the years that will work. auto to standard should not matter engine wise.

mr2mki your are correct: friend was rear ended, truck is totaled.

Lance joker: what makes this swap attractive is I can get the engine for $700.00. I have many other gas guzzling V8's.

Jake72: truck is gone, all he has left is the engine. Toyota wanted $1,800.00 to install new head gaskets and if that worked I would still be left with a 136K mile motor. Even if I could do head gaskets for $500.00 I like the idea of having a newer low mile engine (1) allegedly built with the correct head gaskets and I could probably craigslist my original motor (2) for $500.00 +/-... Thanks again guys for all the replies, its good to hear multiple perspectives.

DK2006: yeah I didn't realize or remember that until I gave Toyota both VIN's to investigate, when they replied they brought that up as a no-go reason. I will perform this swap next week and update with what I found and had to swap. I will take some pictures as well.

If all you are swapping is the motor, I can't imagine there being a difference between the auto and the manual, especially if you keep your ECU.

Gentleman, any idea what my original engine is worth with a bad head gasket? I want to advertise it now so people can hear and drive it. Thanks
