Paper. K&N = insignificant brake hp increase + inferior filtering + PIA to clean. :(

I wasn't referring to you specifically with brand sensitivity, no worries.
I haven't had any issues with K&N and I KNOW personally hundreds of people with modded cars running K&N and other companies and never seen or heard anyone with filter damage to mechanical systems. But who knows?

My uncle is a research chemist whose company was about to release a new cancer drug that had beneficial results in all of their required lab tests for FDA. The week prior to going public there was a hit piece written in the NY Times, no doubt as an attack from competitive drug companies, and the company is all but bankrupt now. So I don't believe anything involving money and testing anymore to be honest.

FWIW, I would bet that many people buy a K&N (or other wet filter) and leave it unchecked for 10 years thinking they are set for a million miles. Don't clean it, don't keep it oiled, etc.. so in real world use you couldn't get a real result on performance, I wouldn't think.

Others still, mentally the car runs great because they have $XXX invested in their filter, even if it's clogged and full of crap or torn and letting dirt pass through. Or installed wrong? But they would still give it a great review because their mind is clogged also.

So who knows! Run what you like and if it sucks hopefully you notice. Hell I knew a guy who didn't have a filter in his truck for years because he never checked and the oil stop didn't put the filter back in.

harm to a system is harder to find if you do it slowly over a long period of time, plus begin throwing in extra variables. It could be that a certain filter does indeed shorten the overall lifespan of a vehicle, but that could be the difference of 300k vs 500k miles. People are probably only going to track a few thousand miles and forget if there's nothing catastrophic. Throw in all the variables of maintenance and driving, and they may mis-diagnose. Finally, many people sell the vehicle before it gets too far into the six digit range.

For me, I'm not that happy with the aFe after a dusty road, so I'm going to do a comparison with a paper after a weekend of offroading to see if there's any short term benefit. Otherwise the charts on aFe filters are showing that I'll be OK as long as I'm washing the thing all the time.

I had a K&N in my Jeep and I will never buy another. The problem is they don't filter well if you go off road. My intake always had a fine coating of dust. The other problem is it takes two days to do a good job cleaning them. Day one, wash and rinse and thoroughly dry. Day two, lightly oil in the morning and then fill in the light spots in the afternoon. Basically its a weekend job. Now some people complain about an oily sludge in the intake, but that is caused by over oiling the thing.

Bottom line they are expensive and don't filter well. Tell me again why you want an air filter that doesn't filter air?

If you spend the time to clean a filter instead of replace it you don't hold much value to your time do you? There is a great deal of science to intake design turbulence, noise reduction, (maybe that is what people like about the K&N the noise) and efficiency. When you clean and oil your filter is it exactly to spec like the paper filter? Back in the 50’s most all air filters where oil bath don’t see them anymore. The added flow is a myth the stock filter flows far more than the engine could ever use and for the aftermarket price you could probably buy paper filter for the life of the truck. To each their own but I’ll stick with something the engine builder determined to be the best thing for their engine.

what the hell are you talking about......I have no problem with opposing oppinions. I was refering to people saying they are junk. The problem Im seeing with this site is there are too many keyboard warriors on here that like to argue over the internet and stick their 2 cents in, get offended when someone states their experience. It seems you are the one that can't handle an oppinion. Grow up would ya. Im not dealing with someone behind a keyboard implying that I can't handle an oppinion.

Now....about the topic. I have never seen any dirt make it past my k&n filters but im sure it is possible since it is a gauze media. I do like afe and aem dry flow filters. they seem to be the best bet for filtration and air flow.

I have over 100k on my truck now. I've had my K&N filter in since 40k. No problems what so ever, no dirt or oil in my intake track. I avg. 17-18 mpg w a lift and 285's.
I do all of my own maintenance and install all of my mods myself.
I like having a filter that I can service whenever I want and put back in. I'd probably use an AFE as well. I guess I feel confident in my ability to read and follow directions properly.

    To each there own.

Retracted. Please don't put me on ignore.
I love filters of all kinds, this is America! And what is more American than freedom from air filter hate?

Let's all go outside and "recharge."

All of this arguing for nothing. For those with K&N, it's the world's best. For those without, here's a hot blonde fixing her Jeep (should've bought a Tacoma?)..
