My buddy that knows a guy that was related to a guy who worked for 3M twenty years ago said that Toyota would most definitely have a V8 diesel as standard equipment by 2014. And all prerunners would be front wheel drive. I personally can't wait to trade.

No way, That must have been too muffled to make out the details of what he was saying.

v8's in the Japanese market is being phased out. The way I see it is that a Jap 4cyl makes the power an american V6 makes and their v6 is equal to a small american V8. Now with that said auto manufactures are playing around with turbo and bi turbo inline 4's and 6's and getting excellent power and mileage. The 4.0 from toyota is plenty of power for what the this truck is built for. Hell if they threw the old 4.7 in it it would get better mileage than the 4.0 it wont even be working hard. Since that engine is gone with the wind Toyota would have to use the 5.7 which is a LONGSHOT in the dark. The frame, body and driveline would all need to be updated and in the end you're better off just buying a tundra.

I imagine this has something to do with it:

    2013 Tacoma Curb Weight: 3,550 lb–3,950 lb

    2013 4Runner Curb Weight: 4,400–4,805 lb

Japanese manufacturers have never really liked V8's anyway, if you are familiar with Japanese vehicle lines through history you'll notice they routinely use V6's where an American manufacturer probably would have offered a V8. Some of it could be that Japan doesn't have the old stigma America did for a while, hearkening to back when engines were much weaker per cubic inch and the V6 was the economy option!

They seem I take baby steps with motor though. Brand new resigned 2014 corolla has same exact 1.8 vvti and auto tranny as the last body style. (Added optional CVT tho).

I bet smaller displacement V-6 with direct injection naturally aspirated with dual vvti and 6-speed auto.

US EPA is such a bitch to comply with I bet they think its not worth the effort for a cetane burner. A bunch of new diesel stuff was coming out 5-6 years ago then disappeared partially because of this. You can, however, get a new grand Cherokee 4x4 turbo diesel for 2014!!! I built one online for $55,000.

Sounds so cool, except you end up with a Chrysler.. named because of how many times you say "Christ!" in the first year of ownership.

I don't think it will be needed. I heard Nissan is working on a 4 cyl Cummins Diesel motor for the new Titan. Look at the new Ford 6cyl , twin turbo gas savers.

No. Toyota can't build a decent V8. Ford and GM has them beat.

Why isn't the factory supercharger on a V6 enough motor?

I'm pretty sure we'll all be driving bloated baby Tundras with 2 cylinder range extended hybrids with CVT transmissions and part time electronic AWD that make the Ridgeline look super macho. Just for the people that keep asking for V8s in a small truck.

You would have to either do the engine swap or buy a Tundra.
