Things like the ScanGauge will show you instantaneous fuel mileage based directly on speed vs. rate of fuel consumption.

I've been getting an 20.x mpg since it became warm this spring/summer, and I probably punch it maybe once per day. Driving like an old man and only with a light toe continuously throughout the week isn't worth the extra 0.6-0.7 mpg that I would get.

My commute is about 24 miles each way with 70% highway, and I usually drive about 70mph. And premium 93 octane does make my engine run better and feel stronger with much less pinging noise, but does absolutely nothing for improving my mpg's.

An ultraguage helps me get better mileage. It makes me aware of my right foot.

I would give anything to get 20 mpg! I used to squeeze 14 with my old 285s now I get 16 if I'm lucky with these michelins

Keep in mind, trucks are shaped more like a brick, it really helps to keep the speed down.
My first truck was a five year old 1976 ford with 20,000 miles. Took a trip cruising at 70mph, the gas mileage worked out to 13mpg. Slowed down to 62mph gas mileage increased to 16.2mpg.
I've had similar experiences with other pickups and SUV's, slowing down always increased my fuel mileage.

One of my wife's vehicles, not shaped like a brick. I was cruising at 90mph with 3 adults and luggage, fuel mileage worked out to 26mpg. Weighed about the same as my taco, had a V6 and less horse power. Obviously a Taco cruising at 90mph will not get 26mph. A brick is pushing more air.

Moral of this story, if you care about fuel mileage try slowing down. Personally I find that I get better fuel mileage by not using cruse control. Some people, my wife for example gets better fuel mileage using cruse control. As others have suggested for best fuel mileage you may need to adjust your driving habits, especially driving with a VERY fragile egg under your foot.

See post 46 in this thread, 26.8mpg with my V6 Taco

I have the 2.7 singlecab and get 22mpg. I learned a long time ago how to drive a truck to get the best mileage out of it - like a grandfather, drive slow and ignore people racing up your tailpipe trying to bully you into driving faster.

When you drive like this, power's not much of a concern.

I am frankly amazed that a doublecab (which weighs a lot more than mine) 2.7 can be made to get 20mpg. Good work.

Sell the Taco and get a Prius. That should be your cheapest mod.
