Just got my first oil change. Service tech said Tacoma's, Tundras, and FJs were synthetic and had 5000 mile change intervals. Other models are 10k. I said you sure about syn and he said yes.

my understand that, the Tacoma 4 cyl takes synthetic (unsure of interval) and the 6cyl takes dyno oil from factory. 5k mile change on v-6 for sure. with synthetic and a good filter I imagine you could get 10k

2.7Liter is full synthetic at 5000 mile interval or 6 months.

4.0 gets Dino oil and 5k intervals. If the advisor gave you Synthetic, and insisted that it was factory, say nothing and let him fill your baby with yummy synthetic. It won't hurt anything, only help...

2.7 has 5k intervals and Synthetic

2.7 is most definitely synthetic, every 5000 miles.

    You're right...

    OP, check your maintainance schedule.

    http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/omms/T-MMS-13Tacoma/pdf/2013_Toyota_Tacoma_WMG.pdf

Schedule A is for the 4.0 6cyl. It starts on page 40. As you can see, the oil change and filter is every 5,000 miles and uses non-synthetic. This doesn't mean that synthetic is bad, just not necessary.

Schedule B is for the 2.7 4cyl. It starts on page 56. As you can see, the oil change and filter is every 5,000 miles and uses synthetic

Mine is a 4.0. They had $2.78/qt on invoice. I do think these guys know. At 2.78 I am guessing Dino. Of course my charge was zero.

The serivce calls for Dino. That's what the dealership can bill Toyota for. If they bill the same rate to toyota for oil changes in general (Dino or synthetic) the advisor could have easily requested the wrong thing and it would get thrown in without question...

If it got synthetic, it should say on the reciept somewhere.

At $2.78 a quart it is probably dino oil.

Why does the 2.7 need synthetic AND the 5K interval? I realize that is the schedule, but what is it about the 2.7 that requires the more frequent change?

Never understood why the 4bangers got the 0w20 syn at every 5k. most Toyotas that take 0w20 syn get the oil change from Toyota every 10k. although I still prefer to use syn and change my oil every 5k anyways. if I used conventional I would probably prefer to change my oil every 3k like the good ol days.

Good old days were never 3k.
That was dreamed up by Jiffy Lube and oil manufacturers.

That's the 1st Gen Tundra... conventional oil, 5k severe service, 7500 normal service. That's miles, not kilometers.

Not sure about the synthetic oil being originally in the Tacoma or synthetic being recommended. I have my 2013 Tacoma manual in front of me. On page #455 (this is for 2.7 liter) it says " Oil grade: IL SAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil. Also says recommended viscosity 0-20. There are conventional oils that are GL-5 and plenty of them. If it states somewhere that synthetic is recommended for the 2.7 liter would someone please tell me where that is stated.

Ok Thanks. I see it now. I must say that is not illustrated very clearly. There are many items/tasks listed on those pages and it just says "Schedule B Synthetic". Also the reference in the owners manual makes no mention of synthetic and this is in the portion that tells the owner what type of oil to use in their new Tacoma. In addition the 5K oil change interval is odd at best. I assume it is a cover your ass situation. I wonder if you could actually get in contact with someone in the know at Toyota Of America if one get get an explanation of these oddities.

It is my understanding that 0-20 weight oil only comes in synthetic.
