I just noticed today on my 2008 truck that the driver side Headlight DTRL lense has melted some. I replaced my regular headlights with the smoked headlights in 2010. I found this TSB from 2011 and was wondering if anyone actually used it and had their headlights replaced? What has been your experience with the new replacement headlights? I am out of warranty and am considering getting the replacement headlights. Check out the TSB and you will see the replacement headlight parts for the non-smoked and smoked.

The factory parts aren't going to be cheap. You can get a set of Depo housings on Amazon for $160 shipped, with the BHLM already done.

Or you can buy some used ones from this forum, add a little time and do the BHLM. Also, Kill the DTL or replace in a few years again. I just did this myself minus the BHLM.

Except that most for sale on the forum are either overpriced, have broken tabs, or the lenses have dulled.

Every now and then a nice set shows up.

^I always find it amazing how many people manage to break the tabs on their headlights. Is this really that common?? I've never broken any headlight tabs on any vehicle I have ever owned, they always seem to be pretty sturdy.

And also, my DTRL have started to melt the reflectors on my 08 as well. Took it to the dealer to show them and they claimed they had never even heard of the problem or seen another Tacoma come in with this issue. I even printed off the TSB and brought it in with me to show them but still no dice. Oh well I tried!

Wouldn't matter. Your '08 is out of warranty, so TSB or not, you're buying the replacements and labor unless the Toyotacare extended warranty will cover it.

I called Toyota just after my warrenty ran out (6 months) and told them about the problem and they acted like they never heard of it.

I have a 2009 that has the discolored lens and it is cracked.

Went to Toyota of Huntington Beach today to inquire about this TSB. At first the guy was giving me a lot of resistance. He gave me the number for the platinum warranty and since they were closed by the time I was at the dealer I will have to call Monday. If they approve the TSB then the dealer will order new lights. Sounds fishy.

You've got an '09, it's going to be out of warranty anyways unless you bought it late in the year.

TSBs are not free unless they are covered under warranty, so even if the dealer orders the lights, expect to pay for it.

    platinum warranty to 80k
Guess it is up to them to decide. I'm aware it isn't free, all the time. If they want to charge me then I'll either leave them or buy aftermarket if they are cheaper than the dealer. Some people have had good luck with it being covered under the extended warranty.

So I wonder if you spring for the extended warranty, it will be covered? I suppose I would have to weight the cost of that extended warranty versus the actual cost of the lights. Sucky, because I bet if an led or lower wattage bulb in the particular spot would have been used, mine would have never melted in my 09'.
