Greedy, but you can get the bushings in Poly from aftermarket parts distributors...

$50 in bushings versus $1400 for a whole rack, yup, they want to rip you off...

The factory manual says 68 ft.lbs. Further, it says to only turn the bolt and not the nut.

Took me six hours to get the steering rack out; 10 minutes to remove stock bushings; and on the NEXT day, only an hour and a half to put it all back together. I want to personally thank ToyoTaco06 for the brilliant writeup, for I would have BURNED MY TRUCK TO THE GROUND without his directions. Yes, I cut the driver's side bolt with a hacksaw blade. Took it for a drive last night and my steering wheel wobble is GONE!!!! Now it's painfully obvious that my ball joints need to be replaced, but I could visually see that as well while under the truck. Cheers to you all who do this with a 4x4 and may you have the patience of a calculated mastermind.

Question about cutting the driver side steering rack bolt - you don't use the same bolt? Did I read correctly to buy a new one? Do you cut a 1/4" off the end?

I cut and bought new. But make sure u are given the right bolt. 4x4 tacos use a longer bolt and in CA they are a special order item they don't keep in stock. Option b is you move the alternator and you don't have to replace anything. Guy at the Toyota shop said its easier to just move the alternator and after doing this I would have to agree.

My question, to rephrase, is, do you cut off 1/4" off the new bolt to install it?

I think I found my answer after reading another thread about a rack/pinion install and the article in FourWheeler, http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/suspension-brakes/1401-better-steering-from-your-rack-and-pinion-tighten-up/. They installed the new bolts upside down.

I don't see why you have to buy bolts from the dealer. Both are the same size, right? I think I'll just remove the passenger size, measure it and get a class 10.9 bolt locally (or 12.9 if I can find one.)

No you don't cut the new bolt. You install the bolt upside down or move the alternator and install right side up.

    Got it. Thanks.

Ordered red Energy polyurethane bushings through Amazon for $50, free shipping. Figured I didn't need the black graphite impregnated bushings as I don't expect much squeaking from them.

It is recommended but I'm not going to since my tires are about 70%. Plus, I'm planning on replacing lower ball joints also.

Finally got the rack undone, but after 2 hours of trying to get the rack out of the truck it seems impossible. Tie rods are disconnected, the 2 bolts are out, the steering shaft is disconnected, and I pulled the compressor. Please help!
